Growing Up and Learning Music
Edmundo Gómez Moreno was born on February 17, 1991. He grew up in San José El Vidrio, a town in Nicolás Romero, State of Mexico. Many people in his family are musicians. His grandfather, cousin, and father all played music. His father was a grupero musician. When Edmundo was a child, he learned to play the keyboard. His father taught him songs by Los Tigres del Norte. He also learned to sing and play drums, guitar, and organ at church.
When he turned 18, Edmundo received a MIDI controller. He used it to start making trance music. Between 2011 and 2012, he joined two other musicians. They formed an electronic music group called Light & Wave. Their song "Feeling the City" was played on Armin van Buuren's radio show A State of Trance twice.
Studying Engineering and Creating Electrocumbia
Around this time, Gómez was studying aerospace engineering at the Instituto Politécnico Nacional in Mexico City. He focused on space systems. In 2013, he had an internship at NASA. He helped develop a satellite for educational purposes. While at NASA, he listened to cumbia music. In 2014, he wrote "Oye Mujer". Raymix said he recorded the song's music video with two cellphones and some borrowed equipment.
Raymix describes his music as a mix of electronic music styles. These include trance, house, chill-out, and ambient. He calls this blend "electrocumbia". His stage name, Raymix, comes from a nickname, "Ray," and "Mix," which shows his interest in electronic music. A friend from college gave him this name. Raymix is also known as "El Rey de la Electrocumbia," which means "The King of Electrocumbia" in Spanish.
