Early Events and Important Markers
On August 30, 1754, a special event happened near Reading. A woman named Susannah Willard Johnson was captured by the Abenaki people. She was being taken on a long journey to Montreal. During this journey, she gave birth to her daughter.

Schools in Reading
Reading has its own school called Reading Elementary School. This school teaches students from Pre-Kindergarten up to 4th grade. In the 2017–2018 school year, there were 60 students.
After 4th grade, students go to The Prosper Valley School in Pomfret, Vermont, for 5th and 6th grades. For grades 7 through 12, students attend Woodstock Union High and Middle School. These schools are part of the Mountain Views School District.

Reading also has several important buildings that help the town run smoothly. These include the Town Hall and the Post Office. There is also the Gilbert A. Davis Library, where people can borrow books and learn new things.
