Mountain History
How Rearguard Mountain Got Its Name
The name "Rearguard Mountain" was given in 1922. This happened during a survey that marked the border between provinces. They named it this because it looked like it was at the "rear" or back of Mount Robson when people were approaching it.
Official Naming and Early Maps
The name became official on February 1, 1923. This was decided by the Geographical Names Board of Canada. The mountain was also shown on a map made in 1911 by Arthur O. Wheeler. This map was of the Mount Robson area.
First Climb to the Top
The very first time people successfully climbed to the top of Rearguard Mountain was in 1913. A group from the Alpine Club of Canada made this exciting first ascent.
Climate Around the Mountain
Rearguard Mountain is in a subarctic climate zone. This means it has very cold winters with lots of snow. The summers are usually mild, not too hot.
Temperatures and Best Time to Visit
Temperatures can drop really low, sometimes below −20 °C. With the wind, it can feel even colder, below −30 °C! If you want to visit or climb, the best months are from June through September. This is when the weather is most pleasant. Any water that melts from the mountain flows into the Robson River.
Mountain Geology
The rocks that make up Rearguard Mountain are sedimentary rock. These rocks formed over millions of years, from the Precambrian to the Jurassic periods.
How the Mountain Formed
Later, during an event called the Laramide orogeny, these rocks were pushed up. They moved east and even slid over younger rocks, creating the mountain we see today.
