Red Lake is a large lake in northern Minnesota, in the United States. Its name comes from the Ojibwe language words Miskwaagamiiwi-zaaga'igan, which means "Lake with its liquid [water] be colored red."
Red Lake is the biggest natural freshwater lake that is completely inside Minnesota. It is also the 16th largest lake in the whole United States. The lake is divided into two main parts by a piece of land called a peninsula. This peninsula sticks out from the eastern side and almost cuts the lake in half. The town of Ponemah is located on this peninsula.
The two parts of the lake are called Upper Red Lake and Lower Red Lake. Lower Red Lake is entirely within the Red Lake Indian Reservation. The lake covers about 440 square miles (1,106 square kilometers). Its deepest point is 273 feet (83 meters). The water level of the lake is kept steady by a dam. This dam is at the start of the Red Lake River, which flows out of the lake.
