Early Life and First Films
René Clément studied architecture at the École des Beaux-Arts. While there, he became very interested in making movies. In 1936, he directed his first film, which was a short movie. It was only 20 minutes long.
Later in the 1930s, Clément traveled to the Middle East and Africa. He made documentaries about these places. In 1937, he went to Yemen to film a documentary. This was the first time anyone had filmed in that country.
Film Career Highlights
About ten years later, Clément directed his first full-length movie. This film, called La Bataille du rail (1945), was about the French Resistance during World War II. It was a big hit with both critics and audiences.
After this success, Clément became one of France's most respected directors. He won many awards for his films. Two of his movies even won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. The first was The Walls of Malapaga in 1950. The second was Forbidden Games in 1952.
Clément's films were popular around the world. However, his big movie Is Paris Burning? (1966) did not do well at the box office. Even though it had many famous actors, it cost a lot to make and did not earn much money.
He also directed the thriller Joy House (1964). This movie starred famous actors Jane Fonda and Alain Delon. Clément continued to make films until he retired in 1975. One of his later international successes was Rider on the Rain. This movie starred Charles Bronson and Marlène Jobert.
In 1984, the French film industry gave René Clément a special César Award. This award honored his amazing work and contributions to movies throughout his life.
Personal Life
René Clément's second wife was Johanna Harwood. She was a screenwriter from Ireland. They met while working on his 1954 film Monsieur Ripois.
Death
René Clément passed away on March 17, 1996. He died just one day before his 83rd birthday. He was buried in the local cemetery in Menton. This town is on the French Riviera, where he had spent his retirement years.
