Rhynchostele is a group of beautiful flowering plants that belong to the Orchidaceae family, also known as the orchid family. These special plants are found naturally in Mexico, Central America, and Venezuela.
If you ever see them mentioned in gardening or plant shops, their name is often shortened to Rst. This makes it easier for people who grow and sell plants to talk about them.
What Kinds of Rhynchostele Are There?
As of May 2014, scientists have officially recognized 19 different types, or species, of Rhynchostele orchids. Each one has its own unique features and grows in specific places.
Some of these species include:
- Rhynchostele aptera - Found from Durango to Oaxaca in Mexico.
- Rhynchostele bictoniensis - Grows from Oaxaca all the way down to Panama.
- Rhynchostele cervantesii - This species has a few different forms, all found in Oaxaca, Mexico.
- Rhynchostele cordata - You can find this one from Puebla in Mexico down to Costa Rica, and also in Venezuela.
- Rhynchostele maculata - This species also has different forms and is found in places like Oaxaca and Veracruz in Mexico, and even in Costa Rica.
- Rhynchostele pygmaea - This type grows in Guatemala and Chiapas, Mexico.
- Rhynchostele rossii - Its home stretches from Querétaro in Mexico to Nicaragua.
- Rhynchostele stellata - Found from Chiapas to Costa Rica, and also in Venezuela.
Sadly, one type, Rhynchostele × vexativa, was collected in Mexico around 1875 and is now thought to be extinct, meaning it no longer exists.
