Robby Ray Stewart is a fun character from the Disney Channel show Hannah Montana. He is played by the singer and actor Billy Ray Cyrus. Robby is the dad of Miley Stewart (played by Miley Cyrus) and Jackson Stewart (played by Jason Earles). He is in almost every episode of the series. The character of Robby is based on Jed Clampett from the old TV show The Beverly Hillbillies. Robby even uses Jed's famous saying, "Well doggies!"

Becoming Robby Ray Stewart

Billy Ray Cyrus tried out for the role of Robby Ray Stewart. He was asked to audition after his real-life daughter, Miley, got the main part of Hannah Montana. At first, Billy Ray was not sure about taking the role. He worried he might "screw up Miley's show."

Miley said it felt "weird" at first to have her actual dad play her TV dad. But later, she said it was "really good." Billy Ray helped create the character of Robby. The character became a bit like a funny, fictional version of himself.

Robby's Story

Robby was born on July 6, 1968, in a made-up place called Bufford County, Tennessee. He has a big family with eight brothers and sisters. He has a twin brother named Bobby Ray, also played by Billy Ray Cyrus. His mother is Ruthie Ray Stewart, known to his kids as "Mamaw." He is also close friends with Dolly Parton, who is his children's godmother.

When he was younger, Robby was a very successful country music singer. He used the stage name "Robbie Ray." He had three number one songs and won awards for his music. He even has a diamond on the Hollywood Parade of Diamonds, like the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

After his wife, Susan, passed away in 2002, Robby stopped his music career. He wanted to take care of his two children. Soon after, he moved his family from Tennessee to California. There, Miley became famous as Hannah Montana. Robby then became her manager, producer, and main songwriter. Sometimes, he would even perform on stage with Hannah.

As Hannah's manager, Robby often wears a fake mustache to hide his identity. This helps keep Miley's secret safe. He also sometimes changes his voice. This disguise, and his sudden stop from music, made some fans think he was gone. However, his fans often still recognized him. He sometimes even told people he was Robbie Ray, Hannah Montana's father. To people who did not know his past music career, he was just "Mr. Montana." Both names helped hide his real identity as Mr. Stewart.

In Hannah Montana: The Movie, Robby temporarily moves the family back to Tennessee. There, he meets a woman named Lorelai, who becomes his girlfriend.

Robby's Personality

Robby is a very loving father. He is strong and firm with Jackson and Miley when he needs to be. But he often prefers to suggest the right thing to do, instead of forcing them. Because of this, Jackson and Miley sometimes do not realize how good he is at being a parent. When they try to trick him, Robby often pretends to believe them. Later, they find out he knew what was happening all along.

A big part of his personality is very childlike. He loves to play jokes. He even had a marshmallow gun fight with the Jonas Brothers in the recording studio! When he first moved to California, he loved playing "Ding-dong Ditch" at famous stars' homes. He can also get his feelings hurt easily, especially by Miley.

Since he is from rural Tennessee, Robby often uses his own "country" sayings. These often confuse Lilly and Oliver, who are from California. He is also known for his catchphrases like "Yee, doggies!", "Dang flabit!", "Say what?!", "Sweet niblets!", and "What the Sam Heck?!" Miley also uses "Say what?!" and "Sweet niblets!".

He is very proud of his cooking skills. However, he tends to eat a lot of unhealthy foods. He makes "Loco Hot Coco," which is his and Miley's "special drink." When he serves it, he says, "Here's some Loco Hot CoCo with little marshmallows so you don't choke-o." He also loves cake and ice cream. He tries to balance his sugar intake by jogging, but he often jogs less and less. Robby loves eating pie. In many episodes, he uses pie to change the subject when he knows something bad has happened. He often says, "So.....who wants pie?"

Robby is very protective of his pie. In one episode, Jackson said he almost lost a finger trying to get between his dad and his pie. Robby also tells "Back when I was a boy" stories. These stories often annoy Miley and Jackson.

He is very fond of his hair. He keeps it in excellent condition using a little bit of volumizing mousse and Brazil nut conditioner. This even attracts wasps!

His favorite instrument is the guitar. He plays it left-handed. He seems to love Gibson guitars. He owns several different types, including one he calls "Lucky Lulu." He can also play the violin and steel guitar.

Robby and Miley's Relationship

Robby sometimes gives Miley advice in a clever way, using reverse psychology. Miley can get frustrated when her dad "goes all fortune cookie" on her. But she also knows she needs his advice, especially when she is in trouble. She really cares about her relationship with her father. She gets jealous if she feels others might threaten it.

A common theme in Hannah Montana is Robby dealing with Miley growing up. He finds it hard to accept that she is no longer a child. So, he often treats her like a little kid. As a single parent, he is also very protective of Miley.

A big moment in their relationship happens in the episode "I Want You to Want Me... to Go to Florida." Robby lets Miley travel to a charity concert in Florida without him. This shows a big step in him accepting Miley's independence. He tells Miley, "no daddy ever wants to see his little girl grow up, [but] every dad knows someday she has to."

Another episode that shows this is "It's a Mannequin's World." Miley tells Lilly that since her mom died, her dad has given her bad presents. For her birthday, he gave her a pink sweater with a cat that meows when you pinch it. Later, Robby Ray admits he bought it because she is still his little girl.

He lets her date, but when she brings a date home, he can be embarrassing. For example, when she brought Jake home, he gave them two seconds to kiss. When Miley and Jake were alone and started kissing, Robby told them to stop from the air vent!

He has many nicknames for Miley: Mile, Miles, Baby Girl, Little Girl, and most often, Bud. Miley dislikes most of her nicknames except for Mile, Miles, and Bud. In "Don't Go Breaking My Tooth," he tells Tim McGraw he has to take his "baby girl" to the dentist. This makes Miley mad because she hates being called a baby.

Robby and Billy Ray Cyrus

Billy Ray Cyrus inspired many parts of the Robby Stewart character. Both men are country musicians from Tennessee. They also share a middle name. Cyrus's real-life relationship with Miley Cyrus is just like Robby's relationship with Miley Stewart on the show. Miley Cyrus has said that the show's writers got ideas by listening to her and her father talk. Also, the show jokes about Robbie Ray being a country star whose fame faded. This was a playful nod to Cyrus's own music career before Hannah Montana became popular.

Robby and other characters on Hannah Montana sometimes mention Cyrus's real-life music and TV shows.

  • In "It's a Mannequin's World," Robby hurts his back and says, "Oh, my achy breaky back!" This refers to the song "Achy Breaky Heart," which is Cyrus's most famous song.
  • In "Ooo, Ooo, Itchy Woman," Robby asks a musical mouse if it can play "Achy Breaky Heart" on the piano.
  • In "New Kid in School," Robby does a funny "impersonation" of Billy Ray Cyrus wearing a mullet wig.
  • In "I Am Hannah, Hear Me Croak," Jackson says his dad would know a good doctor. This refers to Cyrus's role on the TV show Doc.
  • In "My Best Friend's Boyfriend," Robby made fun of "those stupid dance shows" on TV. Cyrus was on the fourth season of Dancing with the Stars.
  • The episodes "Achy Jakey Heart (Part 1 & 2)" are also a reference to "Achy Breaky Heart."
  • In "I Want You to Want Me... to Go to Florida," Robby writes the song "Ready, Set, Don't Go" for Miley. This song was actually written by Billy Ray Cyrus for Miley Cyrus in real life.
