Robert Hossein's Film Career
Robert Hossein began directing movies in 1955 with Les Salauds vont en enfer. He often used stories from the writer Frédéric Dard for his films. From the start, Hossein developed his own unique style. He liked to use mystery plots but would often change how they usually worked. He focused on how people related to each other, especially when they felt guilty. He was very good at using film space and camera shots to show the feelings in a scene. He was also very interested in the works of Dostoyevsky, a famous writer.
In 1967, Robert Hossein was part of the jury at the 5th Moscow International Film Festival. His 1982 film Les Misérables won a special award at the 13th Moscow International Film Festival.
Even though some of his films like Toi, le venin and The Vampire of Düsseldorf were somewhat successful around the world, some critics didn't like his dramatic style. They didn't always appreciate that he was a director with his own clear ideas and a special way of telling stories. He tried many different types of movies, like the Western Cemetery Without Crosses and the historical drama I Killed Rasputin. However, because his films didn't always get wide success and faced criticism, he mostly stopped directing movies in 1970. After that, he focused more on theatre, where his work was highly praised. He only directed a few more films later on. Many of his films are hard to find today.
Robert Hossein's Personal Life
Robert Hossein's father was André Hossein, a composer from Iran. His mother was Anna Mincovschi, a Jewish comedy actress from Bessarabia. Robert Hossein was married three times. His first wife was Marina Vlady, and they had two sons, Pierre and Igor. Later, he married Caroline Eliacheff, and they had a son named Nicholas. In 1976, he married actress Candice Patou, and they also had a son.
His Faith
When he was almost fifty years old, Robert Hossein became a member of the Roman Catholic Church. He had a special religious experience in Italy in 1971, which led to his conversion.
In 2007, he created a play called Do Not be Afraid. This play was about the life of Pope John Paul II. He also had a special devotion to Saint Therese of Lisieux.
His Death
Robert Hossein passed away from COVID-19 on December 31, 2020. This was just one day after his 93rd birthday.
