Sharod Lamor "Roddy" White (born November 2, 1981) is a former American football player. He played his entire professional career as a wide receiver for the Atlanta Falcons in the National Football League (NFL). Roddy White played college football for the UAB Blazers. The Falcons chose him in the first round of the 2005 NFL draft.

Early Life and Sports Talents

Roddy White grew up in Charleston, South Carolina. He went to James Island High School. There, he was an amazing athlete in four different sports. He earned "letterman" honors in football, baseball, soccer, and wrestling.

In football, he was named All-Lowcountry and All-State twice. He was also considered one of the best receivers in the country. In wrestling, he won two state championships.

College Football Career

Roddy White played college football at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). He was a star wide receiver for the UAB Blazers football team. During his four seasons, he caught 163 passes for 3,112 yards. He also scored 26 touchdowns.

He was coached by Watson Brown at UAB. In 2017, Roddy White was honored by being added to the UAB Athletics Hall of Fame.

College Highlights by Year

  • 2001 Season: As a freshman, White played in nine games. He scored his first college touchdown against Cincinnati. He finished with 14 catches for 236 yards and two touchdowns.
  • 2002 Season: In his second year, White had a bigger role. He had a great game against East Carolina with eight catches for 159 yards. He ended the season with 39 catches for 580 yards and three touchdowns.
  • 2003 Season: White continued to play well as a junior. He had 10 catches for 111 yards against Southern Miss. He also had a huge game against Cincinnati with 171 yards and two touchdowns. He finished with 39 catches for 844 yards and seven touchdowns.
  • 2004 Season: This was White's best college year. He had eight catches for 177 yards and three touchdowns against Memphis. He also had a career-high 253 yards against Tulane. White helped UAB reach their first-ever bowl game, the 2004 Hawaii Bowl. He finished his senior year with 71 catches for 1,452 yards and 14 touchdowns.

The Atlanta Falcons picked Roddy White in the first round of the 2005 NFL draft. He was the 27th player chosen overall. He was the sixth wide receiver picked that year.

2005 Season: Rookie Year

White missed some preseason games due to an ankle injury. By Week 2, he was ready to play. In Week 4, he had 64 yards on 5 catches. He scored a 54-yard touchdown against the New Orleans Saints in Week 14. He finished his rookie year with 446 receiving yards. This ranked him fifth among all rookie wide receivers in 2005.

2006 Season: Growing Role

In his second season, White played in all 16 games. He started five of them. His best game was against the Dallas Cowboys, where he had 104 receiving yards. He improved his performance, recording 30 catches for 505 yards.

2007 Season: First 1,000-Yard Season

White had a breakout year in 2007. He had several games with over 100 receiving yards. He became the first Falcons wide receiver since 1999 to gain over 1,000 receiving yards in a single season. He finished the year with 1,202 yards and six touchdowns. He ranked eighth in the NFL for receiving yards.

During a game, White wore a T-shirt supporting his teammate Michael Vick. He was fined $10,000 by the league for this action.

2008 Season: Pro Bowl Selection

White continued to shine in 2008. He had many games with over 100 receiving yards and multiple touchdowns. He set a new team record for receiving yards in a season with 1,382 yards. He also had 88 catches and seven touchdowns.

The Falcons made the playoffs that year. White was chosen for his first Pro Bowl along with teammate Michael Turner.

2009 Season: Big Contract and Records

Before the 2009 season, White signed a six-year contract extension. This made him one of the highest-paid wide receivers. In Week 2, he scored his first touchdown of the season.

On October 11, White set a Falcons record for most receiving yards in a single game. He had 210 yards and two touchdowns against the San Francisco 49ers. One of his touchdowns was for 90 yards. This record was later broken by Julio Jones. White finished the 2009 season with 85 catches, 1,153 yards, and a career-high 11 touchdowns. He was selected for his second straight Pro Bowl.

2010 Season: Leading the League

In 2010, White had an amazing season. He had a career-high 13 catches in the first game. He also had two games with over 200 receiving yards. For his performance against the Cincinnati Bengals, he was named NFC Offensive Player of the Week.

White led the entire NFL in receptions with 115 catches. He also led the NFC in receiving yards with 1,389. He scored 10 touchdowns. He earned First-team All-Pro honors and another Pro Bowl nomination. The Falcons made the playoffs, but lost to the Green Bay Packers.

2011 Season: Breaking Franchise Records

White started the 2011 season strong. He had several games with over 100 receiving yards and touchdowns. He finished the season with 100 catches for 1,296 yards and eight touchdowns.

He broke the Falcons' franchise record for career receptions, passing Terance Mathis. White was added to the NFC Pro Bowl Roster for the 2011 season.

2012 Season: Another Strong Performance

In 2012, White played in all 16 games. He had many games with over 100 receiving yards. He finished the season with 92 catches for 1,351 yards and seven touchdowns.

The Falcons made the playoffs again. White had a touchdown in the Divisional Round win against the Seattle Seahawks. In the NFC Championship game, he had 100 yards, but the Falcons lost to the San Francisco 49ers.

2013 Season: Battling Injuries

White dealt with ankle and hamstring injuries in 2013. This caused a slower start to his season. He missed his first game in nine years, ending a streak of 133 straight games played. Despite injuries, he had a season-high 143 yards against the Buffalo Bills. He finished the season with 63 catches for 711 yards and three touchdowns.

2014 Season: Reaching 10,000 Yards

In 2014, White signed a new contract extension. He continued to be a key player for the Falcons. In Week 11, he reached a major milestone. He became the 42nd player in NFL history to gain 10,000 career receiving yards. He finished the season with 80 catches for 921 yards and seven touchdowns.

2015 Season: Final Year

The 2015 season was Roddy White's last in the NFL. He played in all 16 games. He recorded 43 catches for 506 yards and one touchdown. These were his lowest totals since his second season. On March 2, 2016, the Falcons released him.

Retirement from Football

After not playing in 2016, Roddy White officially announced his retirement from the NFL on April 14, 2017. He retired as an Atlanta Falcon on June 12, 2017.

On June 24, 2017, the Falcons honored Roddy White and Michael Vick with a special retirement ceremony. In 2019, the Falcons announced that White would be inducted into the Falcons Ring of Honor. He was officially added during a game on December 8, 2019.
