The Story of Rokeby: A Look Back in Time
Rokeby began as a large farmhouse called Rokeby House in the 1800s. Back then, the area was known as Clarence Plains. In the 1970s, Rokeby and a nearby suburb called Clarendon Vale were developed. Many homes were built to provide affordable housing for people. This idea was similar to housing projects built in the United States in the 1950s.
How Rokeby Got Its Name
The post office in the area first opened on November 20, 1850. It was called the Clarence Plains Post Office. Later, in 1882, its name was changed to Rokeby, which is what we know it as today.
Rokeby Today: What's Happening Now
Rokeby has been changing a lot over the years. It's becoming a more popular place to live. This is partly because more people are buying homes there. For example, houses that were worth about $20,000 in 2002 are now worth much more!
Fun Places and Important Buildings
Rokeby has a historic church that is very old and interesting. It also has a traditional British cricket ground with a white picket fence, which is a cool place to see a game. You can also explore the Rokeby Historic Trail to learn more about the area's past.
One of the most exciting spots for young people is the Rokeby skate park. It was built around 2001 and is considered one of the best skate parks in Tasmania! In January 2009, it even hosted a big competition that brought in professional skateboarders from all over the world. There was a huge prize of $50,000 for the winners!
Rokeby is also home to the Tasmania Police Academy. This is where new police recruits go to train and learn how to become police officers.
