Rosiers-d'Égletons is a small town, also called a commune, located in central France. It is part of the Corrèze department. The village gets its name from the important Rosier family. Two famous leaders of the Catholic Church, known as popes, came from this family: Pope Clement VI and Pope Gregory XI. The special design on the town's coat of arms originally belonged to the Rosier family. People who live in Rosiers-d'Égletons are often called Rosiérois.
The Rosier Family and Famous Popes
The Rosier family, sometimes called Roger, lived in a region of central France called Limousin. This family became very well-known because two of its members became popes.
- Pope Clement VI was born Pierre Roger. He was pope from 1342 to 1352.
- Pope Gregory XI was born Pierre Roger de Beaufort. He was pope from 1370 to 1378.
We don't know the exact place where these two popes were born. However, we do know they were baptised in a church called "Church of the Roses" (French: l'église de Rosiers). This church likely gave the Rosier family and the town its name.
