Ross was started in 1902. It is famous for being the place where one of the oldest mosques in the United States was built. A mosque is a place of worship for Muslims.
The First Mosque in Ross
The original mosque was built in 1929. Over time, it fell apart and was taken down. But in 2005, a family whose ancestors had built the first mosque rebuilt it.
The people who built the mosque were immigrants from Syria and Lebanon. They moved to this area in the late 1800s. They came to use the Homestead Act, which allowed people to get free land if they promised to live on it and farm it. The story of the mosque was even shared on a radio show called Weekend Edition in 2010.
