Royal George is a small, quiet place in the countryside of Tasmania, Australia. It's known as a "rural locality," which means it's a community outside of big cities. It is located in the northeast part of Tasmania, right by the St Pauls River.
This area is managed by three different local councils: Northern Midlands, Break O'Day, and Glamorgan-Spring Bay. Royal George is about 86 kilometers (about 53 miles) south-east of the town of Longford.
In 2021, a census counted 59 people living in Royal George. It used to be a mining village, and its name comes from a 19th-century ship of the Royal Navy called HMS Royal George. Captain Robert Hepburn, who commanded this ship during the Napoleonic Wars, later settled nearby in 1828.
Exploring Royal George's Past
Royal George officially became a recognized locality in 1954. Before that, it was mainly a mining area.
The village had two different post offices over the years. The first one opened on May 5, 1914, but closed just six years later in 1920. A second post office opened in 1955 and served the community until 1971.
Even though it's a small place, Royal George has a school bus service. This bus helps students get to Avoca Primary School and Campbell Town District High School, making sure kids can attend classes.
Understanding the Geography
Royal George is located in a beautiful natural area. Many of its borders are straight lines, set by land surveys.
The St Pauls River is an important natural feature here. It starts in the northern part of Royal George and flows through the western side of the area. This river is a branch of the larger South Esk River.
Getting Around Royal George
The main road that helps people travel through Royal George is called Route C301. This road is also known as Royal George Road or Old Coach Road. It runs through the locality from the west side to the south-east side, connecting the community to other areas.
