Mohammad Rubel Hossain (Bengali: মোহাম্মদ রুবেল হোসেন) is a famous Bangladeshi cricket player. He was born on January 1, 1990. Rubel started playing international cricket in January 2009 when he was just 19 years old.

He is known as a fast bowler with a special "slingy" action, which means he bowls with a unique arm movement. This style is similar to another famous bowler, Lasith Malinga. Rubel Hossain stopped playing Test cricket on September 19, 2022, to focus on shorter cricket games.

Rubel Hossain's Early Cricket Days

Rubel Hossain began his professional cricket journey playing for Chittagong Division in 2007. This was his first-class debut. After showing good skills in the National Cricket League, he was chosen to play for the Bangladesh Under-19 team. Soon after, he also joined the Bangladesh A team.

Playing in the Bangladesh Premier League

In 2012, the Bangladesh Cricket Board started a new tournament called the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL). This is a fast-paced Twenty20 competition. Teams picked players through an auction. Rubel Hossain was bought by the Sylhet Royals for $70,000.

He continued to play for different teams in the BPL over the years.

  • In October 2018, he joined the Dhaka Dynamites.
  • In November 2019, he played for the Chattogram Challengers.

Rubel Hossain even created his own special way of bowling, which he called the 'Butterfly' delivery.

Rubel Hossain's International Career

Rubel Hossain first joined the One Day International (ODI) team for a special series with Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe. He played his first ODI game in January 2009. In that important match, he took 4 wickets, helping Bangladesh reach the final.

Soon after, he was also selected for the Test team. He made his Test debut against the West Indies in July 2009. In that game, he took three wickets in the first innings.

Memorable Moments in ODIs

Rubel Hossain had one of his best performances in an ODI game against New Zealand. He took six wickets for only 26 runs at Mirpur. During this match, he also achieved a hat-trick, which means taking three wickets in three consecutive balls. This performance was even nominated as one of the best ODI bowling performances of 2013 by ESPNcricinfo.

He was known for his speed, often bowling around 145 kilometers per hour during the 2015 Cricket World Cup.

Overcoming Challenges

During the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy in England, Rubel had an accident at the team hotel. He accidentally bumped into a glass door and fractured his jaw. He had to go back to Dhaka for surgery and was out of play for about six weeks. After recovering, Rubel worked hard to get back into shape and rejoined the national team.

Later Career and Retirement

In April 2018, Rubel Hossain was one of ten cricketers to receive a central contract from the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB). This showed he was a key player for the team. In April 2019, he was part of Bangladesh's squad for the 2019 Cricket World Cup.

In September 2021, he was named as a reserve player for the 2021 ICC Men's T20 World Cup. Later, in October 2021, he joined the main squad for the tournament when another player got injured.

On September 19, 2022, Rubel Hossain announced that he was retiring from Test cricket. He explained that this decision would give younger fast bowlers more chances to play. It also allowed him to focus more on shorter forms of cricket, like ODIs and T20s. He finished his Test career having played 27 matches and taken 36 wickets.
