Early Life and Basketball Beginnings
Rumeal Robinson was born in Mandeville, Jamaica. When he was very young, his mother moved to the Boston area. She left him to be cared for by his grandparents.
When Rumeal turned 10, his grandparents sent him to the United States. They hoped he would reunite with his mother. However, his mother did not want him. For a short time, he had to sleep in apartment hallways and college dorm stairways.
In 1977, a kind local couple, Helen and Lou Ford, took him in. They adopted him in 1978. Rumeal then became a talented basketball player at Cambridge Rindge and Latin School. He led his high school team to a state championship in 1986.
College Basketball Career
Robinson played college basketball for the University of Michigan. During his time there, he averaged 14.3 points and 5.7 assists per game. He became famous in his junior year.
In the 1989 NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Championship, he made two important free throws. These shots came with only 3 seconds left in the game. They helped the Wolverines win the championship against Seton Hall University.
Professional Basketball Journey
In 1990, Rumeal Robinson was drafted by the Atlanta Hawks. He was the 10th player chosen in the first round. He signed a four-year contract with the Hawks.
Robinson played for several other NBA teams. These included the New Jersey Nets, Charlotte Hornets, Portland Trail Blazers, Phoenix Suns, and Los Angeles Lakers. He also spent time playing in other leagues, like the Continental Basketball Association. In the 2001–02 season, he played in the Euroleague for KK Zadar.
His performance in the NBA was sometimes inconsistent. After his first year with the New Jersey Nets in 1992–93, he played fewer games each season.
During the 1995–96 NBA season, the Portland Trail Blazers had three players named Robinson. Rumeal was one of them, along with Clifford Robinson and James Robinson. They were not related to each other.
