Early Life and Acting Dreams
Rupert Grint was born on August 24, 1988, in Harlow, England. His parents are Nigel and Joanne Grint. He is the oldest of five children. When he was very young, he dreamed of becoming an ice cream man!
He grew up in Watton-at-Stone, Hertfordshire. He went to Richard Hale School in Hertford. While in school, he loved acting. He started performing in school plays and joined a local theatre group called Top Hat Stage and Screen School. He even played a fish in a play about Noah's Ark and a donkey in a nativity play.
Even though he loved acting in school, he had never acted professionally before the Harry Potter movies. He left school when he was sixteen to focus completely on his acting career. He said he "didn't really like school that much."
Becoming Ron Weasley: The Harry Potter Years
Finding the Role of Ron Weasley
In 1999, casting began for the first Harry Potter movie, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. This movie was based on the super popular book by J. K. Rowling. J. K. Rowling wanted all the actors to be British.
Rupert Grint was a big fan of the Harry Potter books. He decided to audition for the role of Ron Weasley, who is one of Harry Potter's best friends at Hogwarts. He saw a TV report about the open auditions. He sent in a video of himself rapping about why he wanted to be Ron. The casting team was impressed and asked to meet him.
In August 2000, Rupert Grint, Daniel Radcliffe, and Emma Watson were chosen to play Ron, Harry, and Hermione Granger. Rupert is the oldest of the three main actors.
First Harry Potter Films: A Magical Start
The movie Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone came out in 2001. This was Rupert Grint's very first time acting on screen. The movie broke records for how much money it made on its first day and opening weekend. It was the highest-grossing film of that year. Critics generally liked the movie. Rupert Grint even won an award for Outstanding New Talent!
A year later, Rupert Grint played Ron again in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002). This movie also got good reviews. Critics noticed that Rupert and the other main actors had grown up a lot between the two films.
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004) was released next. In this movie, the three main characters were becoming teenagers. They looked braver, but the dangers they faced seemed much more serious. This film made a lot of money, even though it was the lowest-grossing Harry Potter film.
Growing Up with Harry Potter
In 2005, Rupert Grint returned as Ron for the fourth film, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. This movie explored romantic feelings and had more humor than the earlier ones. Rupert Grint said the director, Mike Newell, was "really cool." Goblet of Fire is one of the best-reviewed films in the series. People praised how the characters matured and the story became darker.
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, the fifth film, came out in 2007. It was a huge success and broke records for its opening weekend earnings. A new director, David Yates, took over for this film and directed all the rest. Rupert Grint said he was "really good" and helped keep things fresh. Rupert and his co-stars even left handprints, footprints, and wand prints in front of Grauman's Chinese Theater in Hollywood.

On July 15, 2009, the sixth movie, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, was released. It also broke box office records. This film is considered one of the most positively reviewed Harry Potter movies. Rupert Grint noticed a change in Ron in this movie. Ron, who used to be insecure, started to become more confident and even showed a darker side. Rupert enjoyed playing a more emotional Ron.
The End of an Era: Deathly Hallows
The future of the Harry Potter movies was uncertain for a bit. The three main actors weren't sure about signing on for the last two films. But by March 2007, Rupert Grint agreed to return. The final book was split into two movies, filmed one after the other. Filming finished in June 2010.
After finishing the last movie, Rupert Grint said it felt very strange. He said, "it literally has been my childhood, and suddenly it all came down to really just one random scene... and then it was over." He found it very emotional to realize they wouldn't be doing it again.
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1 (2010) was released in November. It made over $950 million and set several box office records. Rupert Grint's acting as Ron was praised by critics. One critic called all three main actors "terrific."

He played Ron for the seventh and final time in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2. This movie was full of action. Rupert Grint and the film itself received great reviews. One critic wrote, "Who could have predicted that Radcliffe, Grint and Watson would turn out to be good actors?" The film broke many box office records. It became the fourth highest-grossing film of all time.
J. K. Rowling, the author of Harry Potter, gave a speech at the premiere of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2. She called seven cast members "The Big Seven," and Rupert Grint was one of them.
