Rupert Alexander Lloyd Grint (born 24 August 1988) is an English actor. He became famous for playing Ron Weasley in the amazing Harry Potter movies. He was chosen for the role when he was eleven years old, even though he had only acted in school plays before. Rupert played Ron in all eight Harry Potter films, starting with Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone in 2001 and ending with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 in 2011. Since then, he has continued to act in movies, TV shows, and plays.

Even while working on Harry Potter, Rupert started acting in other films. He had a main role in Thunderpants (2002). He also starred in the comedy-drama Driving Lessons (2006) and the drama Cherrybomb (2009). He was also in the comedy Wild Target (2010). After the Harry Potter series finished, he appeared in movies like Into the White (2012) and Knock at the Cabin (2023).

Rupert first acted on stage in 2013 in a play called Mojo. He also helped produce and starred in the TV series Snatch. He has also been in other TV shows like Sick Note, The ABC Murders, and the spooky series Servant.

Early Life and Acting Dreams

Rupert Grint was born on 24 August 1988 in Harlow, England. His dad, Nigel, sold racing items, and his mom is Joanne. Rupert is the oldest of five children. When he was very young, he dreamed of becoming an ice cream man! He grew up in Watton-at-Stone, and went to Richard Hale School in Hertford.

At school, Rupert loved theatre. He performed in school plays and joined a local acting group. He even played a fish in Noah's Ark and a donkey in a Christmas play! Even with all this acting, he had never acted professionally before Harry Potter. He left school at sixteen to focus on his acting career, saying he "didn't really like school that much."

Joining the Wizarding World

In 1999, casting began for the first Harry Potter movie, based on J. K. Rowling's famous book. Rupert was a big fan of the books and decided to try out for the role of Ron Weasley. Ron is one of Harry Potter's best friends at Hogwarts. Rupert saw a TV report about the auditions and sent in a video of himself rapping about why he wanted the part. The casting team was impressed and asked to meet him.

In August 2000, Daniel Radcliffe was chosen as Harry, Emma Watson as Hermione Granger, and Rupert as Ron. Rupert is the oldest of the three main actors.

The First Films: Magic Begins

The movie Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone came out in 2001. This was Rupert's first time acting on the big screen! The movie was a huge hit, breaking records and becoming the highest-grossing film of the year. It earned over $974 million worldwide. Critics liked the movie, and Rupert won an award for "Outstanding New Talent."

A year later, Rupert played Ron again in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002). This movie also received good reviews, and people noticed how much the young actors had grown. In 2004, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban was released. This film showed the characters growing up and facing more serious dangers.

Growing Up with Harry Potter

In 2005, Rupert returned as Ron for the fourth film, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. This movie explored more about friendships and even included some funny moments. Rupert said the director, Mike Newell, was "really cool." Goblet of Fire is one of the most loved Harry Potter films, praised for its characters growing up and its exciting story.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, the fifth film, came out in 2007. It was a huge success, breaking worldwide opening weekend records. The director, David Yates, took over for this film and directed all the rest. Rupert and his co-stars even left their handprints, footprints, and wand prints in front of Grauman's Chinese Theater in Hollywood!

On 15 July 2009, the sixth movie, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, was released. It also broke box office records and earned $933 million. Critics loved its emotional story and great acting. Rupert noticed that Ron's character changed in this movie, becoming more confident and even showing a darker side, which he enjoyed playing.

The Final Chapters

The last Harry Potter book was split into two movies. The actors were a bit unsure about signing on for the final films, but by March 2007, Rupert agreed to finish the series. Filming for the last two movies happened back-to-back and finished in June 2010. Rupert said it was "very odd" when it was all over because the films had been his whole childhood.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1 (2010) was released in November and made over $950 million. Rupert's acting as Ron was highly praised. Critics called the three main actors "terrific."

Rupert played Ron for the seventh and final time in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2. This movie was full of action and continued right from the previous film. Rupert, along with the movie, received great reviews. The film broke many box office records and became one of the highest-grossing films of all time.

J. K. Rowling, the author of Harry Potter, called Rupert one of "The Big Seven" cast members at the premiere of the final film.

Other Film and TV Roles

Early Non-Potter Work

In 2002, Rupert starred in his first movie outside of Harry Potter, called Thunderpants. He played Alan, a boy who is the only friend of a character who can fly by... well, making loud noises. This movie wasn't very popular.

He also appeared in Driving Lessons (2006), where he acted alongside Julie Walters. Critics had mixed feelings about the movie, but many praised Rupert's performance as a shy teenage boy.

In 2008, Rupert was cast in the drama film Cherrybomb. He found this movie very different from Harry Potter because they filmed many scenes each day. His character, Malachy, tries hard to impress his boss's daughter.

Rupert also starred in the comedy thriller Wild Target (2010) with Emily Blunt and Bill Nighy. This movie didn't do well financially and got mostly negative reviews. However, some critics noted that Rupert did a good job in a role different from Ron Weasley.

In 2011, Rupert made a quick appearance on the BBC comedy show Come Fly with Me. In March 2011, he was chosen for the main role in a Norwegian anti-war film called Into the White, which came out in 2012. It's based on a true story about German and British soldiers who crash-land and find shelter together during a harsh winter.

Rupert also voiced a character in the Postman Pat film, released in 2014. He also appeared in the music video for Ed Sheeran's song "Lego House" in 2011.
