Ruschein was once a small town, also known as a municipality, located in the Surselva area of Graubünden, Switzerland. The main language spoken there is Sursilvan, which is a type of Romansh. On January 1, 2014, Ruschein and several other nearby towns joined together. They all became part of a new, larger municipality called Ilanz/Glion.

Ruschein's History

Ruschein is a very old place. We know it was first mentioned in written records way back in the year 765. Back then, it was called Rucene.

Before it merged with other towns, Ruschein covered an area of about 12.5 square kilometers (that's about 4.8 square miles). A large part of this land, about 43%, was used for farming. Forests covered about 26% of the area.

About 3% of the land had buildings or roads. The rest, about 28%, was made up of things like rivers, glaciers, or mountains. Ruschein is located on a flat area, like a shelf, on the northern side of the Vorderrhein valley. It includes the main village of Ruschein and a special area called Alp da Ruschein. This "Alp" is a place where animals are taken to graze in the mountains during summer.
