Schnaus was once a small town, or municipality, located in the Swiss canton of Graubünden. It was part of the Surselva district.
On January 1, 2014, Schnaus joined with several other nearby towns. These included Castrisch, Ilanz, Ladir, Luven, Pitasch, Riein, Ruschein, Sevgein, Duvin, Pigniu, Rueun, and Siat. All these places became part of a new, larger municipality called Ilanz/Glion.
History of Schnaus
Schnaus is a very old place! It was first mentioned in historical records around the year 840. Back then, its name was Scanaues.
Geography of Schnaus
Before it merged with other towns, Schnaus covered an area of about 3 square kilometers (1.2 square miles).
Most of this land was used for farming, about 58.4%. Forests covered a good portion too, around 30.9% of the area. Only a small part, 2.3%, had buildings or roads. The rest of the land, about 8.4%, was made up of things like rivers or mountains that aren't used for farming or building.
The village of Schnaus is located above the Vorderrhein river. It also included a separate piece of land called Alp da Schnaus, which is located further east above the Val da Siat valley.
People of Schnaus
In 2011, Schnaus had a population of 123 people. About 17.6% of the people living there in 2008 were from other countries. Over the ten years before 2011, the number of people living in Schnaus grew by 43%.
Most people in Schnaus speak Romansh, which is a special language spoken in parts of Switzerland. In 2000, about 45.5% of the people spoke Romansh. The next most common language was German, spoken by 40.4% of the population. A smaller group, 11.1%, spoke Serbo-Croatian.
In 2000, about 17.2% of the population were children aged 0 to 9 years old. Teenagers, aged 10 to 19, made up 14.1% of the population.
Many adults in Schnaus have completed higher education. About 57.7% of people aged 25-64 had finished either advanced high school or a university degree.
Schnaus had a low unemployment rate of 4.89%. In 2005, a few people worked in farming, and a few more worked in small businesses like shops or services.
