Riein (Romansh pronunciation: [ʁiˈjɛjn]) is a small village in Switzerland. It is located in the Graubünden canton, which is a region in the eastern part of the country. Riein used to be its own separate town. However, on January 1, 2014, it joined with twelve other nearby villages. They all became part of a new, larger municipality called Ilanz/Glion. This merger helped these smaller communities work together more easily.

History of Riein
Riein is a very old place! The first time Riein was ever written about was in the year 765. Back then, it was known by the name Renino. Later, in 960, its name changed slightly to Raine. These early mentions show that people have lived in this area for a very long time.
Where is Riein Located?
Riein is nestled in a beautiful part of Switzerland. It sits on a flat area of land (a terrace) that is east of a river called the Glenner. The village is also located near the entrance to a valley known as Lumnezia.
The village itself is a haufendorf, which means it grew in an unplanned way. Its buildings are close together around a central area. Riein also includes a smaller settlement called Signina. Signina joined Riein between 1904 and 1905. The Val da Riein, which is a valley, separates Signina from the main village of Riein.
Before Riein joined Ilanz/Glion, it covered an area of about 15.8 square kilometers (about 6.1 square miles). A good portion of this land, about 21.9%, was used for farming. Forests covered a large part of the area, about 37.2%. Only a small amount, less than 1%, had buildings or roads. The rest of the land was made up of natural features like rivers and mountains.
