Russell Gardens is a small village located on the Great Neck Peninsula. It's part of the Town of North Hempstead in Nassau County, on the North Shore of Long Island, New York, United States. In 2020, about 978 people lived there.

This area was first planned to be part of the nearby village of Thomaston. However, the people living in Russell Gardens didn't agree. They decided to create their own separate village in the same year.

History of Russell Gardens

Russell Gardens was first developed by Francis H. Knighton. He had also worked on the nearby community of Kensington. The land was mostly open fields where people often played polo.

How Russell Gardens Got Its Name

Most of the village's 135 acres used to be part of Captain Frederick Russell's large estate. Before him, the Schenck and Haviland families owned the land. Knighton bought this land and other parts from Arthur Cushman. He quickly started building the community and named it Russell Gardens after Captain Russell.

Building the Community

Knighton's group continued to develop the area. They planned streets, set up utilities, and created parkland. They made sure all the electrical wires were placed underground. A landscaper named J.J. Levinson designed the community's green spaces.

Becoming an Official Village

In 1931, the nearby village of Thomaston wanted to become an official village and include Russell Gardens. But the people of Russell Gardens wanted to keep their community special. They felt it was important to become their own village. This way, they could make their own rules about how the land was used. Most residents voted to become a village that year. Russell Gardens officially became an incorporated village on September 23, 1931.

Village Justice Court

In 1981, Russell Gardens started its own Village Justice Court. This court helps the village handle local issues. These include traffic tickets and problems with village rules.
