Ryan Christie is a Scottish professional footballer born on February 22, 1995. He plays as a midfielder or winger. Currently, he plays for Premier League club Bournemouth and the Scotland national team.
Ryan started his football journey with Inverness Caledonian Thistle. Later, he joined Celtic in 2015. During his time at Celtic, he also played on loan for Aberdeen twice. He has also proudly represented Scotland at both the under-21 and senior national team levels.
Club Career Highlights
Starting at Inverness Caledonian Thistle
Ryan Christie was born in Inverness, Scotland, in 1995. His father, Charlie Christie, was also a footballer who played for Caledonian Thistle.
Ryan joined the Inverness Caledonian Thistle youth team when he was 10 years old. He signed his first professional contract in 2011. He was one of several young players promoted to the club's main team.
He made his first team debut in the Scottish Premiership on December 29, 2013, against Celtic. Ryan came on as a substitute in the Scottish League Cup Final against Aberdeen. Inverness lost that game on penalties.
Ryan scored his first goal for Inverness on April 1, 2014, in a match against Motherwell. He scored two more goals that season. After showing great skill, Ryan signed a new contract with the club.
In the 2014–15 season, Ryan scored his first goal against Hamilton Academical. His excellent performances earned him the SPFL Young Player of the Month award for August. He won this award again in February 2015.
Ryan was also nominated for the PFA Scotland Young Player of the Year award. He later won the SFWA Young Player of the Year award. Ryan played in the 2015 Scottish Cup Final, which Inverness won 2–1 against Falkirk. He described winning the Scottish Cup as "unbelievable."
Moving to Celtic
First Years at Celtic (2015–2016)
On September 1, 2015, Ryan Christie signed a four-year contract with Celtic. After signing, he was immediately sent back to Inverness on a loan deal for the season.
He got a knee injury in November and was called back to Celtic to get treatment. In December 2015, Celtic officially ended his loan spell at Inverness.
Ryan made his first appearance for Celtic on January 23, 2016. He came on as a substitute in their 3–1 win over St Johnstone.
Loan Spells at Aberdeen
On January 24, 2017, Ryan joined Aberdeen on loan until the end of the 2016–17 season. He scored his first goal for Aberdeen on February 4, 2017, in a 2–0 win against Partick Thistle.
He helped Aberdeen finish second in the 2016–17 Scottish Premiership. They also reached the 2017 Scottish Cup Final. However, Ryan could not play in the final because it was against his main club, Celtic.
Ryan returned to Aberdeen on loan for most of the 2017–18 season. This move happened in June 2017 as part of a deal for another player, Jonny Hayes.
Success at Celtic (2018–2020)
Ryan Christie returned to Celtic for the 2018–19 season. In the 2018–19 League Cup semi-final against Hearts, Ryan played a key role. He won a penalty, caused a mistake by the goalkeeper, and scored a great goal. Celtic won the game 3–0.
Ryan signed a new contract with Celtic in November 2018. On December 2, he scored the only goal in the 2018 Scottish League Cup Final against his former loan club, Aberdeen. His season ended early on April 14, 2019, in the Scottish Cup semi-final. He suffered facial injuries after a collision with an opponent.
For the 2019–20 Scottish Premiership season, Ryan scored three goals in Celtic's first game, a 7–0 win against St Johnstone. In October 2020, he scored the first goal in the 2019–20 Scottish Cup semi-final against Aberdeen. Celtic won 2–0.
In the final against Hearts, he scored a very similar goal. Although he missed his penalty in the shootout, Celtic won the trophy after a 3–3 draw.
Joining Bournemouth
On August 31, 2021, Ryan Christie moved to England. He joined EFL Championship club Bournemouth on a three-year contract. The transfer fee was reported to be around £1.5 million.
On September 11, 2021, Ryan made his debut for Bournemouth. He came off the bench in their 3–0 win over Barnsley. On October 8, 2022, he scored his first Premier League goal. This goal helped Bournemouth win 2–1 against Leicester City.
In April 2025, Ryan had a groin injury. This injury meant he could not play for the rest of the 2024–25 season.
International Career
On August 25, 2014, Ryan Christie was called up to the Scotland U21 squad. He made his Scotland U21 debut on September 9, 2014, against Luxembourg U21. Scotland U21 won the game 3–0.
Ryan received his first call-up to the senior Scotland squad in November 2017. He played the entire 90 minutes in a 1–0 loss against the Netherlands.
He scored his first international goal on November 16, 2019. It was a curling shot from outside the penalty area in a 2–1 away win over Cyprus. This was part of the UEFA Euro 2020 qualification matches.
In September 2020, he scored penalties in two games. Scotland drew with Israel and beat the Czech Republic. These matches were in the 2020–21 UEFA Nations League.
In October 2020, Ryan had to leave the Scotland squad. This was for a Euro 2020 play-off semi-final against Israel. He had been in close contact with another player who tested positive for COVID-19.
A month later, Ryan returned to the team. He scored Scotland's only goal in the Euro 2020 play-off final against Serbia. Scotland won the game on a penalty shootout after a 1–1 draw. This win meant Scotland qualified for a major tournament for the first time in 22 years!
Ryan was part of Scotland's squad for UEFA Euro 2020. He played in one match during the tournament. This was the team's opening 2–0 defeat to the Czech Republic.
On June 7, 2024, Ryan was named in Scotland's squad for UEFA Euro 2024. A week later, he started the first match of the tournament against Germany. This game marked his 50th cap for Scotland. He also played as a substitute against Switzerland and Hungary. Scotland finished last in their group with one point.
