Rye Patch State Recreation Area is a fun outdoor area in Nevada, USA. It covers about 2,400 acres, which is like 1,800 football fields! This park is next to the large Rye Patch Reservoir. This reservoir holds about 11,000 acres of water from the Humboldt River. There are also two smaller lakes nearby called Pitt-Taylor Reservoirs.

You can find this recreation area at the end of State Route 401. This road connects to a big highway, Interstate 80, about 22 miles northeast of Lovelock. It's a great place for outdoor adventures and learning about history.

Exploring the History of Rye Patch

The land where Rye Patch State Recreation Area now sits has a very long and interesting history. Long, long ago, this part of Nevada was covered by a huge ancient lake called Lake Lahontan.

Ancient Animals and Early Humans

About 23,000 years ago, Lake Lahontan started to shrink. Animals like camels, horses, rabbits, and squirrels came to drink from the Humboldt River. Scientists have found their fossils about 14 miles north of the dam. These fossils help us learn about the animals that lived here in the past.

Later, about 8,000 years ago, humans also started to live and camp along the Humboldt River. We know this from things found at places like Lovelock Cave. These discoveries show that people have enjoyed this area for thousands of years.

The Gold Rush and Lassen Meadows

In the mid-1800s, many people traveled through this area during the California Gold Rush. They were heading to California to find gold. Travelers would let their cattle eat the wild ryegrass growing near what is now Rye Patch Reservoir. This grassy area was known as Lassen Meadows.

Lassen Meadows was an important spot on the California Trail. A special path called the Applegate-Lassen Cut-Off left the main trail here. This cut-off offered a quicker way to places like Goose Lake and the gold fields in California.

Building the Rye Patch Dam

The Rye Patch Dam was built between 1933 and 1936. This was during a tough time in history called the Great Depression. The dam project was part of the New Deal, a plan by the government to create jobs. The Public Works Administration helped build it.

In 1971, the reservoir became a Nevada State Recreation Area. This means it was set aside for people to enjoy and protect.
