The Story of Rögle BK
How the Club Started
Rögle BK was started on December 18, 1932. It began as a bandy club. Bandy is a sport similar to ice hockey, but played with a ball instead of a puck. That's why the club's full name is "Rögle Bandyklubb," which means "Rögle Bandy Club." The bandy team was even champions in their region (Scania) in 1948!
Journey to the Top League
The club's ice hockey team first played in Sweden's top league (then called Division I) from 1966 to 1969. Later, they returned to the top league, then known as Elitserien, between 1992 and 1996.
After spending 12 years in the second-tier league, HockeyAllsvenskan, Rögle BK made it back to Elitserien in 2008. They had a surprising start in the 2008–09 season, even reaching a top spot early on! However, they finished 11th and had to play in a special playoff round called Kvalserien to stay in the league. They succeeded and stayed for another season.
In the 2009–10 season, Rögle finished last. They had to play in Kvalserien again but unfortunately lost their spot and went back down to HockeyAllsvenskan.
Brief Return and Big Win
Rögle briefly returned to Elitserien in 2012. They were the first team to get into Elitserien by winning the HockeyAllsvenskan playoff round first. But their return only lasted one season, as they were relegated again in 2013.
A huge achievement came in the 2021–2022 season. Rögle BK won the 2021–22 Champions Hockey League! They beat Tappara from Finland 2–1 in the final game, which was played in their home city of Ängelholm on March 1, 2022. This was a fantastic win for the club!
Future Plans
On December 14, 2022, Rögle BK announced exciting news: they plan to start a women's ice hockey team for the 2023–2024 season. This team will begin by playing in the WDHL.
Recent Seasons Overview
Rögle BK has had some strong performances in recent years in the SHL.
- In the 2019–20 season, they finished 3rd in the league. The playoffs were cancelled that year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
- During the 2020–21 season, they finished 2nd. They made it all the way to the Swedish Championship Finals but lost there.
- In the 2021–22 season, they finished 1st in the regular season! They then reached the semifinals in the playoffs. This was also the season they won the Champions Hockey League.
