Newton, also known as Newton Green, is a small village in Suffolk, England. It is called Newton Green to help tell it apart from other places like Nowton or Old Newton. This lovely village is part of the Babergh area.

You can find Newton on the A134 (Assington Road). It sits between the towns of Sudbury and Colchester, about three miles from Sudbury.

A Glimpse into Newton's Past

Newton has a long and interesting history! It was even recorded in a very old book called the Domesday Book. This book was like a big survey of England made almost 1000 years ago. Back then, it was known as "Niwetuna."

If you follow Church Road north from the A134, you will find Newton Hall. You will also see the beautiful All Saints Church. Both of these are about one kilometer from the heart of the village.

The village used to have its own school. However, it closed down in 1938. Today, that same building is used as the village hall. It is a place where people can meet and hold events.

Fun on the Green: Golf and Nature

One of the most special things about Newton is its village green. This large grassy area, located to the south and west, has a unique purpose. In 1907, it was turned into a 9-hole golf course!

This makes it one of the oldest golf clubs in all of Suffolk. People who live in Newton can even become members of the local golf club. They can use the holes on the village green, but not the clubhouse. Besides golf, the green is also a home for local wildlife.

Nature's Beauty: Ancient Woodlands

Newton parish is also home to some amazing natural areas. It includes Alstrop Wood and part of the Edwardstone Woods SSSI. An SSSI is a special place protected for its important plants, animals, or geology.

Both of these woodlands are known as ancient woodland. This means they have been continuously wooded for hundreds of years. They are very important for nature. A small group of houses called Sackers Green is also found within the parish.

Life in Newton Today

Newton is a friendly and welcoming place. It was even named "Village of the Year" for 2009-2010!

The village has one pub, which is a very old building from the 15th century. It is located close to the golf course. In early 2010, the pub was renamed Saracens. Before that, it was known as Saracens Head.

You can also find several farms in the area. These include Hill Farm to the west and Jarvis Farm to the southeast.
