Early Life and Military Training
Sadae Inoue was born in Kumamoto Prefecture in Japan. He was the third son of a local police officer. However, he officially listed his home as Kōchi Prefecture.
He attended special military schools to prepare for a career in the army. In 1908, he graduated from the 20th class of the Imperial Japanese Army Academy. This was an important step for his future in the military.
Military Career and Leadership
After graduating, Inoue joined the IJA's 44th Infantry Regiment. He served during Japan's Siberian Intervention. This was a time when Japan sent troops to eastern Russia. They were fighting against Bolshevik forces there.
Rising Through the Ranks
When the Second Sino-Japanese War began, Inoue was a commander. He led the IJA's 5th Infantry Regiment. He steadily moved up in rank. In March 1939, he became a major general. He then took command of the IJA 33rd Division.
In 1941, he worked at the headquarters of the Taiwan Army of Japan. He was promoted again in 1942. He became a lieutenant general. From 1942 to 1943, he was the commanding general of the 69th Division. This division was stationed in Shanxi province, China.
Defending Pacific Islands
In 1943, General Inoue took command of the 14th Division. This division was based in Manchukuo. As World War II continued, the war in the Pacific War became more difficult for Japan. Because of this, the 14th Division was sent to the Southern Expeditionary Army Group.
General Hideki Tōjō personally gave Inoue the task of defending Palau. Both Inoue and Tōjō knew that the 14th Division would struggle. They faced many more Allied forces. However, the Japanese government believed it was vital to defend the islands very strongly. They hoped this would make the Allies suffer heavy losses. This might discourage them from invading other Japanese areas.
Key Battles in Palau
Two major battles happened in Palau under General Inoue's command. These were the Battle of Angaur and the Battle of Peleliu. Both battles were very costly. Many soldiers on both sides were injured or died.
General Inoue changed Japanese tactics during these battles. He did not use the usual "banzai charges." Instead, he used the land and built strong defenses. He tried to make the battles last a long time. This strategy aimed to cause as much damage as possible to the enemy.
Life After the War
After World War II ended, General Inoue was taken into custody. He was sent to Guam. There, he faced a military trial. He was found responsible for actions taken by his soldiers. These actions involved the treatment of three American airmen captured in Palau.
His initial sentence was changed in 1951 to life in prison. He was released in 1953. Sadae Inoue passed away in Japan in 1961.
