Saint-Ghislain is a city and a municipality in Wallonia, Belgium. A municipality is like a local government area. It is found in the province of Hainaut.

The municipality of Saint-Ghislain includes several smaller areas. These areas are Baudour, Hautrage, Neufmaison, Saint-Ghislain itself, Sirault, Tertre, and Villerot.

History of Saint-Ghislain

The city gets its name from a person called Saint Ghislain. In the 600s, Saint Ghislain and two friends cleared some land near a place called Castrilocus. Today, this place is known as Mons.

Later, Saint Ghislain settled in an area named Ursidongus. Here, he built a small church or oratory. This church was dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul. Over time, Ursidongus became known as Saint-Ghislain, named after him.

Economy and Innovation

Saint-Ghislain is a place where new technology is important. In 2007, the company Google chose Saint-Ghislain. They built a large European datacenter here. A datacenter is a huge building that stores many computers. These computers help run internet services like Google Search and YouTube.
