St. Thomas was founded in 1881. It got its name from another place called St. Thomas, Ontario in Canada.

A post office has been open in St. Thomas since 1881. It helps residents send and receive mail on weekdays.

The St. Thomas Public School started in 1882. For many years, it taught students from pre-kindergarten all the way through 12th grade. The class of 2021 was the last to graduate from St. Thomas Public School. Now, students from St. Thomas attend school in Grafton, North Dakota. This is part of the new Grafton School District #18.
