The Delphinium parryi is a beautiful wildflower. People often call it the San Bernardino larkspur or Parry's larkspur. It is a type of larkspur plant. This plant grows naturally in Baja California and California. You can find it from the San Francisco Bay Area all the way south. It likes to grow in places with chaparral and woodlands, as well as other natural areas.
What it Looks Like
The Delphinium parryi plant can grow quite tall. It can reach almost 1 meter (about 3 feet) in height. Its stems feel a bit fuzzy when you touch them. The leaves are also fuzzy and have deep cuts or lobes, making them look like small hands.
The Flowers
This plant produces many flowers. They grow in a cluster called an inflorescence. This cluster can hold anywhere from a few flowers to more than 60! Each flower sits on a long stem called a pedicel.
The flowers have parts called sepals and petals. These parts are usually deep purple or light blue. Sometimes, the top petals are white, which makes the flower stand out. Each flower also has a special part called a spur. This spur can be longer than two centimeters (about an inch).
Where it Grows
The San Bernardino larkspur is native to specific regions. It grows in California and Baja California. This means it has lived in these areas for a very long time.
Natural Homes
You can often find this larkspur in chaparral and woodlands. These are areas with shrubs and trees that are common in California. It also grows in other natural habitats. These include places like the California Coast Ranges and the Peninsular Ranges. It thrives in the San Francisco Bay Area, the Santa Monica Mountains, and the Transverse Ranges.
