Santa Cruz River facts for kids
The Santa Cruz River is an important river that flows through parts of southern Arizona in the United States and northern Sonora in Mexico. It starts in the high, grassy areas of the San Rafael Valley, which is east of Patagonia. The river begins between the Canelo Hills to the east and the Patagonia Mountains to the west.
The Santa Cruz River first flows south into Mexico. Then, it turns west and re-enters the United States near Nogales. From there, it continues its journey northward. It passes by several important places like the Tumacácori National Historical Park, Tubac, Green Valley, and Sahuarita. The river also flows past Mission San Xavier del Bac and the city of Tucson. Finally, it reaches the Santa Cruz Flats, just south of Casa Grande and the Gila River.
