Scaleby's Population Changes
Scaleby's population has changed a lot over time. In the early 1800s, around 618 people lived there. But by 2001, this number had dropped to 349. This big drop happened because Britain changed from being mostly about farming to having more factories and other industries.
Why Scaleby's Population Decreased
Scaleby was always a farming area. When there was less demand for farm products, many people moved away to find work. In the 1830s, most jobs were in farming, small shops, or other manual labor. As these jobs became less common, people left Scaleby.
Between 1850 and 1930, the number of houses in Scaleby also went down. This shows how much the village struggled. Even today, farming is still the main industry in Scaleby. The area has a lot of farmland, covering about 3,464 acres.
Scaleby's Rich History
Scaleby is special because it's a "parish." This means it traditionally has one church and one priest. The main church in Scaleby is the Church of All Saints.
The Church of All Saints
The Church of All Saints was built a long time ago, in the early 1200s. Its tower was added in the 1300s. This church is a protected historic building. Some of its stones might even come from the ancient Hadrian's Wall nearby.
The church has beautiful old features, like its original round entrance arch. Inside, you can see white marble plaques dedicated to important local families. Even though the church is very important, another building nearby is even more famous.
Scaleby Castle's Story
Just half a mile from the village center is Scaleby Castle. This castle is also a protected historic building, but it's not open to the public. Scaleby Castle has a long and interesting past.
We don't know exactly when Scaleby Castle was first built. It wasn't always a castle. The first records show that King Henry I gave the land to Richard de Talliol between 1100 and 1135. Over many years, it was built up and repaired. It was officially called a castle in 1367.
The castle faced many challenges. In the 1500s, Sir Richard Musgrave helped fix it up. But in 1645, soldiers damaged it. It stayed in ruins for a long time, from 1772 until the early 1800s, when it was finally restored.
Today, Scaleby Castle still stands. You can still see parts that show its long history, like the ruined upper floors. The moat, a water-filled ditch around the castle, is another cool feature that makes the castle look amazing.
