Schizachne is a group of plants that belong to the grass family. These plants are found in many parts of Eurasia and North America. There is only one main type of plant in this group that scientists agree on. It is called Schizachne purpurascens, but you might know it better as false melic.

What is False Melic?

False melic is a type of grass. It gets its common name because it looks a bit like another grass called Melica, but it's not exactly the same. This plant is part of a very large family of grasses that includes many important plants like wheat, corn, and rice.

Where Does False Melic Grow?

This interesting grass grows in many different places around the world. You can find it across parts of Europe and Asia, including Russia, China, Mongolia, Korea, and Kazakhstan. It also grows widely in North America.

In North America, false melic is found in all ten provinces of Canada, plus the Yukon and Northwest Territories. In the United States, it grows in Alaska, the Rocky Mountain States, the Great Lakes Region, and the Northeast.

Different Types of False Melic

Even though there's only one main species of false melic, scientists have found three different types, or subspecies, of Schizachne purpurascens. These subspecies are slightly different from each other, often because they grow in different regions.

  • Schizachne purpurascens subsp. callosa: This type is found in European and Asian Russia, China, Mongolia, Korea, and Kazakhstan.
  • Schizachne purpurascens subsp. capillipes: This type grows in the Kamchatka area.
  • Schizachne purpurascens subsp. purpurascens: This is the type found across Canada and the United States.
