Solving a Spooky Family Mystery
The story begins when Velma gets a surprising phone call. A lawyer named Cuthbert Crawley tells her she has inherited a huge property. This includes a castle in Transylvania, Pennsylvania, from her great uncle. Velma doesn't want anything to do with it, which puzzles her friends.
The Baron's Curse and a Big Bang
Mr. Crawley understands Velma's feelings. He explains there's a curse on the estate. If anyone gets too close to the Baron's family legacy, what they love most will be destroyed. Just then, Fred's beloved Mystery Machine explodes outside! A mysterious character wearing a mask appears. Crawley says it's the ghost of the Baron, Velma's old ancestor. The exploding machine leaves a message: "stay away from Transylvania." But Fred is determined to go there to find out who destroyed his van. He says, "this time it's personal!"
A Secret Family Name
Since the Mystery Machine is gone, the gang has to take a train. Velma then shares a big secret: her real last name is Von Dinkenstein! Her great-grandparents shortened it to Dinkley when they moved from Germany. Her ancestor, Baron Von Dinkenstein, was said to have created a monster called Frankencreep. This monster even inspired Mary Shelley to write her famous novel, Frankenstein. Velma explains that this family history is why she loves solving mysteries.
A Runaway Train and New Friends
Suddenly, the train speeds up! Shaggy goes to the front and finds the Masked Baron's ghost instead of the conductor. The ghost warns them the curse is affecting them before tearing off the control panel and vanishing. The gang manages to save the last train car and everyone inside just before the train crashes and explodes. When they arrive in town, they meet new people. These include an inspector, the burgermeister (town mayor), and Iago, a hunchbacked servant from Castle Von Dinkenstein. Iago takes them to the castle, where they meet Mrs. Vanders, the housekeeper.
The Frozen Monster and Velma's Plan
Inside the Baron's laboratory, they find Frankencreep frozen in a block of ice! Velma is shocked but also determined. She vows to recreate the experiment to prove the monster was fake. She tells everyone to leave. As her friends go, Mrs. Vanders shows Velma a machine that hypnotizes her.
Strange Changes and a New Mystery
Things get really weird when the gang goes to a village festival. Daphne finds her clothes are suddenly too tight because she's gained weight. Shaggy and Scooby become brave and aren't even hungry! Fred is still sad about his destroyed Mystery Machine. Iago arrives and saves the gang from angry villagers. He tells them Velma has gone crazy.
Velma's Transformation and Frankencreep's Return
When they return to the castle, Velma has changed. She has pink hair, new clothes, and has brought Frankencreep back to life! The villagers try to fight the monster, but Frankencreep scares them away. Daphne and Fred are still upset and wander off. Shaggy and Scooby, still brave, decide to capture Frankencreep themselves. Velma manages to knock out the monster. She plans to take Shaggy and Scooby's brains to put them into Frankencreep, joking that they share one brain!
Back to Normal and a Narrow Escape
Luckily, things start to get better. Fred finds a workshop and builds a brand new Mystery Machine. Daphne discovers her "weight gain" was just an inflatable suit. Frankencreep accidentally rips off Shaggy and Scooby's new brave outfits, turning them back into their old, scared, and hungry selves. As Frankencreep chases them, it accidentally hits the lever of the machine that hypnotized Velma. This brings her back to normal! Iago appears and warns them that the castle is about to explode. They manage to escape and pretend they died in the blast.
Unmasking the Villains
The gang then tricks the burgermeister, the inspector, a gypsy who sold Daphne the inflatable dress, and Mrs. Vanders onto the express train. They trap them in a train car. Just when they think the mystery is solved, Frankencreep reappears! It turns out to be a robot, and Iago is controlling it. Iago then reveals he's actually an undercover agent named Shmidlap from the United States Department of Defense. He says one of their special robot suits was stolen and tracked to Transylvania.
A Conspiracy of Revenge
It's soon revealed that this wasn't just about a stolen robot. It was a big plan for revenge! The burgermeister, inspector, gypsy, and housekeeper were all working together.
- The inspector is unmasked as Cuthbert Crawls, who was a green ghost in an old Scooby-Doo mystery!
- Velma exposes the burgermeister as C.L. Magnus, who once pretended to be Redbeard's ghost.
- The gypsy is revealed to be Lila, a singer who posed as a zombie.
- Finally, Mrs. Vanders is unmasked as Mama Mione, a cafe owner and criminal leader who dressed up as Old Iron Face. She reveals that Iron Face's mask was the same as the Baron's ghost mask.
The four criminals admit they planned this revenge. They found out about Velma's family history and bought the castle. It was sitting on natural gas, which is explosive! Velma points out that they could have made a huge fortune if they had just sold the land, since she didn't want the castle. The villains are shocked to learn this, and the gang laughs. The criminals are arrested again. The Mystery Machine is rebuilt, and the gang drives off, heading home!
