Sean Everet Johnson (born May 31, 1989) is an American professional soccer player. He plays as a goalkeeper for Major League Soccer club Toronto FC. Sean also plays for the United States national team.

Early Years and College Play

Sean Johnson grew up in Lilburn, Georgia. He went to Brookwood High School there. For a short time, he also attended high school in California. He finished high school in 2005.

After high school, Sean moved to Florida. He played college soccer at the University of Central Florida. He was a great player and was named Team MVP in 2008. Sean decided to leave college early to join the professional soccer draft. He was part of a special program called Generation Adidas.

While in college, Sean also played for a team called Atlanta Blackhawks. This was in a league for young players called the USL Premier Development League.

Starting His Professional Career

Sean Johnson was chosen by Chicago Fire in the 2010 MLS SuperDraft. He was the last player picked from the Generation Adidas program that year. Sean played his first Major League Soccer (MLS) game on August 1, 2010. His team won 3–2 against Los Angeles Galaxy.

In his first year, he won "Save of the Week" awards two times in a row. In 2013, he was named the Chicago Fire's Defender of the Year. He played many games for the Fire, keeping the opposing team from scoring in 6 games.

Moving to New Teams

In December 2016, Sean was traded from the Chicago Fire to Atlanta United. On the same day, he was traded again to New York City FC. He played a lot of games for NYCFC, making 206 appearances. He helped the team win the MLS Cup in 2021 as their main goalkeeper.

On January 27, 2023, Sean signed a two-year contract with Toronto FC. He has been playing for them since then.

Playing for His Country

Sean Johnson has citizenship in both the United States and Jamaica. He had tryouts with Jamaica's youth teams when he was younger.

He later joined the United States U20 team in 2009. He played in one championship game and three friendly matches. He was also a backup player for the 2009 FIFA U-20 World Cup.

Sean was also part of the U23 national team in 2012. This team played in a tournament to qualify for the Olympic Games.

Playing for the Main National Team

Sean played his first game for the main United States national team on January 22, 2011. He came into the game during halftime against Chile.

He was chosen as one of the goalkeepers for the United States team in the 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup. Sean got his first start for the senior national team on July 17, 2013. He helped the team win 1–0 against Costa Rica, keeping them from scoring any goals. This game was important because it meant Sean officially chose to play for the United States.

In November 2022, Sean was named to the United States team for the 2022 FIFA World Cup. He was a backup goalkeeper and did not play in the games.

Sean also helped the United States win the 2022-23 CONCACAF Nations League.

Sean's parents are Everet and Joy Johnson. His father is from Jamaica, and his mother is African-American.
