History of Sebastopol
Sebastopol was first known as "Hathaway Springs." The town existed even before the American Civil War. However, it did not officially become a town until 1917.
How Sebastopol Got Its Name
People say that a traveler from Sweden named the town. He named it after Sevastopol, a city in Crimea. It is thought that this traveler might have been Frederick Law Olmsted. He is famous for designing Central Park in New York City. Olmsted traveled through the southern United States. He was studying and writing about slavery for The New York Times. His writings were later published in a book.
Life in Sebastopol
Every fall, Sebastopol hosts a fun event called Sebastopolooza. It is a large fall festival that attracts many people. In 2010, over a thousand people attended.
Sebastopol is located between four bigger towns: Forest, Carthage, Union, and Philadelphia. While Sebastopol has a local grocery store, most people travel to these larger towns to buy things for their homes. The closest movie theater is in Philadelphia, Mississippi.
In the late 1990s, Sebastopol got cable TV. However, homes just outside the town limits still do not have cable. Many local people use satellite dishes to watch TV. This also makes it hard for them to get fast internet. In 2010, the only cable company in Sebastopol stopped its services.

Most of Sebastopol is in Scott County. A small part of the town is in Leake County. In the year 2000, all 233 residents lived in Scott County. By 2006, only one person lived in the Leake County part.
