Sellicks Beach is a coastal suburb in South Australia. It is located about 47 kilometers (about 29 miles) south of the main city of Adelaide. This makes it one of Adelaide's outer southern suburbs.

The area is part of the City of Onkaparinga local government area. It sits right on the edge of the Adelaide metropolitan area. The traditional owners of this land are the Kaurna people. They call this place Witawali or Witawodli. It is a very special place to them because of a freshwater spring. This spring is believed to have been created by the tears of Tjilbruke, a very important creator being in their stories.

Sellicks Beach is located within Aldinga Bay. The suburb's borders are Button Road to the north and the Main South Road to the east. To the south, it meets the boundary of the Hundred of Willunga. The coastline along Aldinga Bay forms its western edge. In 2016, about 2,616 people lived in Sellicks Beach.

History of Sellicks Beach

Before European settlers arrived, the land around Sellicks Beach was home to the Kaurna people. They lived across the Adelaide Plains and down the western side of the Fleurieu Peninsula.

The Tjilbruke Dreaming Story

There is a very important Aboriginal Australian sacred site at Sellicks Beach. It is linked to the Kaurna people's Dreamtime stories. These stories tell about Tjilbruke, a creator ancestor. A special commemorative plaque was placed on Francis Street in 1986. This plaque is part of the Tjilbruke Dreaming Track. It helps people remember the important stories of the Kaurna people.

How Sellicks Beach Got Its Name

The name "Sellicks Beach" first appeared in 1925. It was used for a new housing development. This development was called "Sellicks Beach Estate." It was created by two farmers, George and Robert Herrick, who lived nearby in Aldinga. Sellicks Beach officially became a recognized place on October 28, 1993.
