Sembrancher is a small town, also called a municipality, in the Entremont district. It is located in the Valais area, known as a canton, in Switzerland.

History of Sembrancher
Sembrancher has a long history. It was first mentioned in official records way back in 1177. Back then, it was known by a different name, Sancti Pancratii de Branchi. Its old German name, St Branschier, is not used anymore.
Geography and Location
Sembrancher covers an area of about 17.7 square kilometers (6.8 square miles). A good part of this land, about 17.5%, is used for farming. Forests cover a large portion, about 63.1% of the area.
The town itself, with its buildings and roads, takes up about 4.1% of the land. The remaining 15.3% is land that cannot be used for farming or building.
Sembrancher is the main town of the Entremont district. It is located where two rivers, the Dranse de Bagnes and the Dranse d'Entremont, meet. The town is also on the road that leads over the famous Great St Bernard Pass. It is about 10 kilometers (6 miles) from the popular Verbier ski resort and the town of Martigny.

The coat of arms for Sembrancher has a special design. It shows a blue background with silver hills at the bottom. From the left side, a green arm appears, holding a golden branch. This design is called Azure, in base Coupeaux Argent, issuant from sinister an Arm proper clad Vert and cuffed Argent holding a branch Or.
People and Population
Sembrancher has a population of about 796 people. Most people in Sembrancher speak French. About 98.2% of the population uses French as their main language. A smaller number of people speak German (0.8%) or Italian (0.5%).
The population is almost evenly split between males and females. About 50.1% are male and 49.9% are female. Most residents were born in Sembrancher or elsewhere in Switzerland.
In terms of age, children and teenagers (0–19 years old) make up about 28.8% of the population. Adults (20–64 years old) are the largest group at 53.2%. Seniors (over 64 years old) make up 18.1% of the population.
Most people in Sembrancher are Roman Catholic, making up about 89.0% of the population. A smaller group, about 3.7%, belongs to the Swiss Reformed Church.

Sembrancher's economy involves different types of jobs. In 2008, there were 36 people working in the primary sector, which includes farming. The secondary sector, which includes manufacturing and construction, employed 138 people.
