Senshi-Con is a fun yearly event in Anchorage, Alaska. It's a special type of gathering called an anime convention. It started in 2005 and was the very first anime event in Alaska!
The name 'Senshi-Con' mixes the English word convention with the Japanese word senshi (戦士). Senshi means 'warrior' in Japanese. The Alaska Association of Asian Cultural Learning helps put on this event.
What You Can Do at Senshi-Con
At Senshi-Con, there are lots of exciting things to do! You can bring fake prop weapons if they go with your costume. But real metal weapons and toy guns are not allowed, even if they look fake.
There's a cosplay contest where people dress up as their favorite characters. You can also play video games, watch anime movies, and sing karaoke. They even have Cosplay Chess and cool art displays!
Sometimes, famous people who work on Japanese comics and cartoons come to visit. You might even get their autograph! All day long, there are different contests, game shows, and short plays on stage.
Senshi-Con is not as big as some other events in North America. But the people who run it say that means shorter lines and better planning for everyone!
How Senshi-Con Started
The very first Senshi-Con happened in 2005. It was held at West Anchorage High School in Anchorage, Alaska. A voice actress named Kira Buckland and the West High School Anime Club started and organized it.
As the people who ran the event graduated from high school, Senshi-Con moved. It found a new home at the University of Alaska Anchorage.
Later, on September 30, 2012, it was announced that Senshi-Con would move again. It went to the William A. Egan Civic and Convention Center in downtown Anchorage. In 2017, the convention moved to the Dena'ina Civic and Convention Center. Senshi-Con 2020 was cancelled because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
