Shahidullah Kaiser (born February 16, 1927) was a famous writer and journalist from Bangladesh. He wrote many novels and worked for newspapers. He was recognized for his work with several important awards, including the Bangla Academy Literary Award in 1969. Sadly, he disappeared on December 14, 1971, during the Bangladesh Liberation War.

His Early Life and Family

Shahidullah Kaiser was born as Abu Nayeem Mohammad Shahidullah in a village called Mazupur. This village is now in the Feni District of Bangladesh. He went to school at Amirabad BC Laha High School.

Education and Studies

He later studied at Presidency College, Kolkata. There, he earned a bachelor's degree in economics. He also started a master's degree at Calcutta University but did not finish it. At some point, he started using the name Shahidullah Kaiser.

His Family

Shahidullah Kaiser was married to Panna Kaiser. She was also a writer and novelist. Panna Kaiser later became a member of parliament. Their daughter, Shomi Kaiser, is a well-known television actress. Their son, Amitav Kaiser, works as a banker.

His Work in Journalism and Politics

Shahidullah Kaiser was very involved in politics and cultural movements. He started this work when he was a student. After Pakistan was formed in 1947, he joined a political group in East Pakistan.

Starting as a Journalist

In 1949, he began working as a journalist. He joined the newspaper Ittefaq in Dhaka. He wrote for this newspaper for many years.

Role in the Language Movement

Shahidullah Kaiser played an active role in the Language Movement in 1952. This movement was about protecting the Bengali language. Because of his political actions, he was arrested on June 3, 1952. He was kept in jail for about three and a half years.

More Arrests and Work

After he was released in 1955, he was arrested again. This happened during a time when many activists were being arrested. He was released a few years later. In 1958, Kaiser joined The Sangbad, another Bengali newspaper. He worked there as an associate editor for the rest of his life. When the military took control in 1958, he was arrested again. He stayed in jail for four years until September 1962.

His Disappearance

During the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971, Shahidullah Kaiser helped freedom fighters. He collected medicine and food for them. He delivered these supplies to places where fighters could pick them up.

The Events of December 1971

Towards the end of the war, on December 14, 1971, Shahidullah Kaiser was taken away. He was targeted because he was a leading intellectual. He was never seen again, and his body was never found. It is believed that he was killed along with many other intellectuals. His brother, Zahir Raihan, who was a famous filmmaker, also disappeared while looking for Kaiser.

A Warning Ignored

In early December 1971, Kaiser advised his friend Sufia Kamal to leave Dhaka for safety. However, he himself chose to stay. Because he stayed, he was caught by the Pakistani Army.

His Works and Awards

Shahidullah Kaiser was a talented writer. His works are still remembered today.
