A Look Back: Sharpsburg's History
Sharpsburg became an official town in 1871. This happened when the Georgia General Assembly, which is like Georgia's state government, made it a town. The town got its name from Judge Elias Sharp. He was an important local leader, serving as a city commissioner.
Sharpsburg's Location and Size
Sharpsburg is found in the eastern part of Coweta County. You can find its exact spot using these coordinates: 33°20′22″N 84°39′1″W / 33.33944°N 84.65028°W. The town of Turin is very close by, just to the southeast.
Two main roads pass near Sharpsburg:
- Georgia State Route 16 goes through the southern part of town. It leads west about 10 miles (16 km) to Newnan, which is the county seat. It also goes southeast about 7 miles (11 km) to Senoia.
- GA 54 heads northeast about 5 miles (8 km) to Peachtree City.
The United States Census Bureau says that Sharpsburg covers a total area of about 0.98 square miles (2.53 square kilometers). Only a tiny part of this area, about 0.01 square miles (0.02 square kilometers), is water.
