Early Life and Family Background
Shaun Cameron Wright-Phillips was born on October 25, 1981, in Greenwich, London. His dad is Ian Wright, a famous former England football player, who adopted Shaun when he was three. Shaun's younger brother, Bradley Wright-Phillips, is also a professional footballer. Bradley is actually the top goal scorer ever for the New York Red Bulls team. Shaun grew up in Brockley and went to school at Haberdashers' Aske's Hatcham College. His family comes from Trinidad and Grenada.
Shaun's Club Football Journey
Starting at Manchester City
Shaun Wright-Phillips first joined Nottingham Forest as a young player. But when he was 17, he left them and joined Manchester City. He played his first game for Manchester City as a substitute in a League Cup match against Burnley.
Two months later, he played his first league game against Port Vale. He came on as a forward and helped his team win 2-1 after they were losing. His shot led to Manchester City's first goal. After this, he started the next two games. Manchester City got promoted to the Premier League for the 2000–01 season.
In the Premier League, Shaun played more often, but he wasn't a regular starter yet. He played in different attacking positions. Manchester City was relegated again after just one season.
Under manager Kevin Keegan, Shaun became a key player. He played as a wing-back, which is a mix of a winger and a defender. Keegan liked attacking football and used Shaun's speed and dribbling skills in this role. From 2000 to 2003, Shaun won Manchester City's Young Player of the Year award four times in a row! This was a new record for the club.
In 2004, during an England game in Spain, some fans made unpleasant comments towards him. But Shaun showed great strength. He said he would "just let the football do the talking" in his next game for Manchester City. He also said he wanted to make his "own path" in football, separate from his famous dad.
Moving to Chelsea

On July 18, 2005, Shaun Wright-Phillips moved to Chelsea, who were the Premier League champions at the time. The transfer cost about £21 million. He signed a five-year contract and returned to his hometown of London. Even though he had said he wouldn't leave Manchester City, he made the move.
At Chelsea, he didn't play as much as he wanted at first. He started only 15 games in his first season and found it hard to score goals. Because of this, he missed out on going to the 2006 FIFA World Cup with the England team.
Despite not playing regularly, Shaun said he was happy at Chelsea and wanted to stay and fight for his place. His first goal for Chelsea came in a Champions League game in December 2006. This was his 52nd game for the club!
As the 2006–07 season went on, Shaun started playing better. He scored his first league goals against West Ham United. He then started in several important games, including the 2007 FA Cup Final, which Chelsea won.
At the start of the 2007–08 season, Shaun kept his starting spot on the right wing. He played in the 2008 Football League Cup Final, which Chelsea lost to Tottenham Hotspur. However, he played less towards the end of the season. After the new manager Luiz Felipe Scolari arrived, Shaun was allowed to leave the club.
Back to Manchester City

On August 28, 2008, Shaun went back to his old club, Manchester City. He signed a four-year contract. In his very first game back, he scored two goals against Sunderland in a 3-0 win! He scored his third goal for City in a huge 6-0 victory over Portsmouth. Just over a month after returning, he had already scored as many goals as he did in his entire time at Chelsea.
The 2009–10 season started very well for Shaun. He helped set up goals and scored some himself. He scored in games against Crystal Palace, Arsenal, Burnley, and Hull City. He also helped Manchester City reach the semi-finals of the League Cup.
Under manager Roberto Mancini, Shaun sometimes found himself on the bench because of new players joining the team. However, he still made an impact. In a game against his former club Chelsea, he came off the bench and helped set up a goal in a 4-2 win. He scored an important goal in the last game of the 2009–10 Premier League season against West Ham.
In the 2010–11 season, Shaun played fewer league games. There was a lot of competition for places in the team with new signings like David Silva and Yaya Touré. Manchester City won the 2010–11 FA Cup that season. Even though Shaun wasn't in the squad for the final, he played in earlier rounds, including the semi-final against Manchester United.
Time at Queens Park Rangers
On August 31, 2011, Shaun Wright-Phillips joined Queens Park Rangers (QPR). He signed a three-year contract. He played his first game for QPR against Newcastle United and was named the best player by the fans.
It took him almost a year to score his first goal for QPR, which happened in a League Cup game in August 2012. His only goal for QPR in the Premier League came against his old club Chelsea in January 2013. QPR was relegated to the Championship at the end of that season.
QPR quickly returned to the Premier League, but Shaun played less and less. After the 2014–15 season, QPR announced that Shaun would be leaving the club.
Playing in the United States
In June 2015, Shaun started training with the Major League Soccer team, the New York Red Bulls. He wanted to get fit again after leaving QPR. He impressed the coach and joined the team in July, playing alongside his brother, Bradley Wright-Phillips.
He made his debut on August 1, coming off the bench. He helped his brother score a goal and also won a penalty, helping his team win 3-1. He was even named in the MLS Team of the Week for his great performance. Shaun left the Red Bulls at the end of 2015 but re-signed with them in January 2016.
On February 23, 2017, Shaun signed for Phoenix Rising FC, another team in the United States. He played his first game for them in March 2017.
Shaun Wright-Phillips officially announced his retirement from playing football on August 24, 2019, when he was 37 years old.
Shaun's International Career with England
Shaun Wright-Phillips played his first game for the England national team on August 18, 2004, against Ukraine. He came on as a substitute and scored England's third goal in a 3-0 win. It was a fantastic goal after he ran with the ball by himself.
He was a regular player for England during the qualifying games for the 2006 FIFA World Cup. He started his first competitive game in a 1-0 win against Wales. However, because he wasn't playing well and didn't get many games at Chelsea, he missed out on being in the squad for the World Cup finals.
After playing well at the start of the 2007–08 season, Shaun was called back to play for England. He played against Germany in a friendly game at the new Wembley Stadium. Even though England lost, Shaun played very well and was named the man of the match.
On September 8, 2007, Shaun started for England against Israel in a Euro 2008 qualifier. He scored the first goal in a 3-0 victory and was again named man of the match. He scored his third goal for England in another 3-0 win against Estonia at Wembley. He also played in a very important Euro 2008 qualifying match against Croatia. England lost that game and missed out on Euro 2008.
On October 14, 2009, England had already qualified for the 2010 World Cup. Shaun started the game against Belarus at Wembley Stadium and scored a goal. On March 3, 2010, he came on as a substitute against Egypt. He scored England's second goal and helped Peter Crouch score the third, as England came back to win 3-1.
On June 1, 2010, Shaun was chosen for England's final 23-man squad for the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. He played as a substitute in England's first two group games against the United States and Algeria.
Shaun's Personal Life
Shaun Wright-Phillips has a son named D'Margio Wright-Phillips. D'Margio is also a footballer and plays for a club in Belgium. He has also played for the England U16s team.
