Club Career Highlights
Starting at Manchester City
Shaun Wright-Phillips was released by Nottingham Forest when he was 17. Manchester City then signed him. He played his first game for Manchester City as a substitute in a League Cup match in 1999. His first league game was two months later. He helped his team win that game, even though his first shot was counted as an own goal by the opponent.
In his early years, Shaun played in different attacking roles. Manchester City was promoted to the Premier League in 2000. Even though they were relegated the next season, Shaun became a key player. His coach, Kevin Keegan, used him as a wing-back. This position combines attacking and defending, which suited Shaun's speed and dribbling skills. He won Manchester City's Young Player of the Year award four times in a row from 2000 to 2003.
In 2004, during an international game, Shaun faced some unfair treatment from parts of the crowd. However, he showed great strength. He said he would "let the football do the talking" with his performance in the next game. He also wanted to make his own name in football, not just be known as Ian Wright's son.
Moving to Chelsea

On July 18, 2005, Shaun Wright-Phillips joined Chelsea, who were the Premier League champions. The transfer cost about £21 million. He signed a five-year contract. Even though he had said he wouldn't leave Manchester City, he moved back to his hometown of London.
At Chelsea, he didn't play as much as he used to. He started only 15 games in his first season and found it hard to score goals. Because of this, he missed out on going to the 2006 FIFA World Cup with England. Despite not playing regularly, Shaun said he was happy at Chelsea and wanted to fight for his place.
He scored his first goal for Chelsea in December 2006, in a Champions League game. This was his 52nd game for the club. He then started to play better in the 2006–07 season. He scored his first league goals against West Ham United. He also started in the 2007 FA Cup Final, which Chelsea won.
In the 2007–08 season, he kept his starting spot for a while. However, he played less often after new managers came in. He made 65 starts and came on as a substitute 60 times for Chelsea. But he couldn't get a regular spot in the team. He left Chelsea in 2008.
Back to Manchester City

On August 28, 2008, Shaun returned to Manchester City. He signed a four-year contract. The transfer fee was around £8.5 million. In his first game back, he scored two goals against Sunderland, helping City win 3–0. He quickly matched his entire goal-scoring record from Chelsea in just over a month.
The 2009–10 season started well for him. He set up goals and scored some himself. He scored against Crystal Palace, Arsenal, Burnley, and Hull City. However, under manager Roberto Mancini, he often found himself on the bench. New players like Adam Johnson meant Shaun had to fight for his place. Despite this, he still made an impact, like setting up a goal in a 4–2 win against his old club Chelsea.
In the 2010–11 season, Shaun played even less, making only seven league appearances. This was due to more competition from new signings like David Silva and Yaya Touré. Manchester City won the 2010–11 FA Cup that season. Even though he wasn't in the final squad, he played in earlier rounds, including the semi-final against Manchester United.
Time at Queens Park Rangers
On August 31, 2011, Shaun Wright-Phillips joined Queens Park Rangers (QPR). He signed a three-year contract. He made his first start for QPR on September 12, 2011, and was named man of the match by the fans.
It took him almost a year to score his first goal for QPR. This happened in a League Cup game against Walsall in August 2012. His only Premier League goal for QPR was against his former club Chelsea in January 2013, which QPR won 1–0. Despite this win, QPR was relegated to the Championship at the end of that season.
QPR returned to the Premier League the next season by winning the play-off finals. However, Shaun played less and less. After playing very few games in the 2014–15 season, QPR announced that he would be leaving the club.
Playing in the United States
In June 2015, Wright-Phillips started training with the Major League Soccer club New York Red Bulls. He wanted to get back in shape after leaving QPR. He impressed the coach and joined the club on July 27, 2015. This meant he could play alongside his brother, Bradley Wright-Phillips.
He made his debut on August 1, coming off the bench. He helped his brother score a goal and won a penalty, contributing to a 3–1 victory. He was even named in the MLS Team of the Week for his performance. He was released by the Red Bulls at the end of 2015 but re-signed with them in January 2016.
On February 23, 2017, Shaun signed for Phoenix Rising FC in the United Soccer League. He played his first game for them in March 2017. Shaun Wright-Phillips officially announced his retirement from football on August 24, 2019, when he was 37 years old.
International Career with England
Shaun Wright-Phillips played his first game for England on August 18, 2004. He came on as a substitute against Ukraine. He scored the last goal in England's 3–0 win, which was described as a "stunning finish." He often played for England during the qualifiers for the 2006 FIFA World Cup. However, due to his form and lack of games at Chelsea, he missed out on the World Cup squad.
After playing well at the start of the 2007–08 season, Shaun was called back to the England team. He played against Germany in a friendly match at the new Wembley Stadium. Even though England lost, he was named man of the match for his impressive performance.
In September 2007, he started for England against Israel in a Euro 2008 qualifier. He scored the first goal in a 3–0 win and again won the man of the match award. He also scored against Estonia in another 3–0 win. He played in a very important Euro 2008 qualifying match against Croatia. England lost that game and did not qualify for Euro 2008.
On October 14, 2009, with England already qualified for the 2010 World Cup, Shaun started against Belarus. He scored a goal from outside the penalty area. He also came on as a substitute against Egypt in March 2010. He scored England's second goal and helped set up the third, as England won 3–1.
On June 1, 2010, Shaun was chosen for England's final 23-man squad for the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. He played as a substitute in England's first two group matches against the United States and Algeria.
