Shireen Mehrunnisa Mazari (Urdu: شیریں مہر النساء مزاری) is a former Pakistani politician. She served as the Federal Minister for Human Rights from 2018 to 2022. She was also a member of the National Assembly of Pakistan, which is like the main law-making body in Pakistan. She was a member from 2013 to 2018, and again from 2018 to 2022.

Mazari studied at the London School of Economics and earned her PhD from Columbia University. She also worked as a professor and led a department at Quaid-i-Azam University. Later, she became the head of the Institute of Strategic Studies. In 2009, she became the editor of a newspaper called The Nation.

Early Life and Education

Shireen Mazari was born on April 26, 1949, in Quetta, Balochistan, Pakistan. She is from the Baloch ethnic group.

She went to the London School of Economics for her studies. After that, she earned her PhD in political science from Columbia University in the United States.

Professional Career and Work

Before becoming a politician, Shireen Mazari had an important career in academics and journalism.

Academic and Research Roles

She was an associate professor at Quaid-i-Azam University. She later became the chairperson of the university's Department of Defense and Strategic Studies. This department focuses on how countries protect themselves and plan for the future.

In 2002, Mazari became the head of the Institute of Strategic Studies. This is a government-funded organization that researches important national and international issues. She worked there until 2008.

Journalism and Media

In 2009, Mazari was appointed as the editor of The Nation, a well-known newspaper in Pakistan. She also hosted a weekly television show on Waqt News.

Family Life

Shireen Mazari is married to Tabish Aitbar Hazir. They have a daughter named Imaan Zainab Mazari Hazir and a son named Sabeel Hazir.

Political Journey

Shireen Mazari joined the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) political party in 2008.

Joining and Leaving PTI

When she first joined PTI, she served as the Information Secretary and Spokesperson for the party in 2009.

In 2012, she left the PTI party for a short time. She rejoined the party in 2013.

Serving in the National Assembly

In 2013, she was elected as a member of the National Assembly of Pakistan for the first time. She won a seat reserved for women from Punjab in the 2013 Pakistani general election.

She was also the chief whip for PTI in the National Assembly. A chief whip makes sure that party members vote according to the party's decisions.

She was re-elected to the National Assembly in the 2018 Pakistani general election on a reserved seat for women.

Minister for Human Rights

On August 18, 2018, Imran Khan, who became the Prime Minister, announced his government's cabinet. Shireen Mazari was chosen to be the Minister for Human Rights.

On August 20, 2018, she officially took her oath as the Federal Minister for Human Rights. In this role, she worked to protect and promote human rights in Pakistan.

In January 2020, she spoke out against an attack on a temple in Karak by a group of people.

Stepping Down from Politics

On April 10, 2022, Shireen Mazari resigned from the National Assembly. This happened after a "Vote of No Confidence" against Prime Minister Imran Khan.

Later, in May 2022, she was briefly held, but a court ordered her release, saying the action was not lawful.

On May 23, 2023, Shireen Mazari announced that she was leaving the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party and retiring from active politics. She stated personal reasons for her decision.
