Shortsville is a small village in Ontario County, New York, United States. It is officially known as the Village of Shortsville. In 2020, about 1,400 people lived there. Shortsville is located in the southwestern part of the Town of Manchester. It sits just north of the City of Canandaigua.

History of Shortsville

Shortsville started in 1804. It was first called "Short Mill." This name came from Theophilus Short. He built two mills along the Canandaigua Outlet. The village officially became a village in 1889.

Growth as a Mill Town

Shortsville grew because of its mills. Many mills were built there. These included mills for flour, wool, and paper. They were built in addition to Short's first flour and sawmills.

Past Companies in Shortsville

Several companies used to be in Shortsville.

  • Empire Drill Works: This company was started in 1850. Hiram and Calvin Brown founded it. It made drills and closed in 1900.
  • Shortsville Wheel Company: This company made wheels for carriages and cars. It began in 1889. It closed in the early 1900s.
  • Papec Machine Company: This company made tools for farming. It stopped working in the 1980s.

Early Schools in the Village

The first school in Shortsville was built in 1807. A larger district school was built in 1911. Shortsville High School was finished by 1915. Today, a building and field for St. Dominic Church are on the old high school site. This church is part of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Rochester.

The village covers about 0.6 square miles (1.6 square kilometers). All of this area is land. There is no water within the village limits.

Roads and Nearby Places

County Road 13 is the main street in Shortsville. It meets New York State Route 21 on the west side of the village. Shortsville is also about two miles south of the New York State Thruway. It is also two miles south of New York State Route 96. The Village of Manchester is right next to Shortsville, to its north.
