The slate-colored hawk is a cool bird of prey found in South America. Its scientific name is Buteogallus schistaceus. This bird belongs to the Accipitridae family, which includes other amazing birds like hawks, eagles, and their relatives.
You can find the slate-colored hawk in countries like Brazil, Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Venezuela, and French Guiana. It loves to live in warm, wet places, especially swamplands.
What Does the Slate-Colored Hawk Look Like?
This hawk is a medium-sized to large bird. It has a pretty slate-grey color all over its body. Its tail feathers are special, with bright white stripes that stand out.
Its chest is mostly white, with some black lines going up and down. The hawk also has a large orange cere (that's the waxy part at the base of its beak). Plus, it has big, bright yellow eyes!
Where Does the Slate-Colored Hawk Live?
The slate-colored hawk lives in parts of the Amazon basin and the Orinoco region. It also calls French Guiana home. This bird likes to hunt near water. It looks for frogs, crabs, snakes, and small mammals.
Because it hunts near water, you'll mostly find it along the main Amazon River. This area is like a wide "wildlife highway" about 700 kilometers wide. It includes places where big rivers like the Rio Negro, Madeira, Tapajós, and Xingu join the Amazon.
The hawk's home range stretches into the southwestern and northwestern parts of the Amazon basin. It reaches the foothills of the Andes mountains. You can find it in northern Amazonian Bolivia, eastern Peru, and Ecuador. It also lives in southeastern Amazonian Colombia.
In the far northwest, its range gets narrower. It includes central-northeastern Colombia and a part of the Orinoco River in central-southwestern Venezuela. Interestingly, you won't find the slate-colored hawk in the north-central Amazon basin or near the coast of Guyana. However, it does live in French Guiana and Brazil's Amapá state, including Marajó Island.
