Smithfield is a small community in Ohio, United States. It is an unincorporated place and used to be a village. In 2019, the people living there voted to change it into an unincorporated place. This means it is now part of the larger Smithfield Township in Jefferson County. In 2010, about 869 people lived in Smithfield. It is also part of the Weirton–Steubenville Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Smithfield's Story
Smithfield was first planned out and marked on a map in 1803. A post office, where people could send and receive mail, opened in Smithfield in 1814.
During the American Civil War in 1863, a Confederate general named John Hunt Morgan and his soldiers traveled through Smithfield. This event was part of "Morgan's Raid," where Union soldiers eventually defeated them.
In 2016, there was a vote to decide if Smithfield should stop being a village and become part of the surrounding township. The village voted to stay a village then. However, in November 2019, Smithfield voted again and decided to dissolve itself.
