History of Sodus Point
In 1794, Sodus Point became the first place where European-American settlers built homes in the town of Sodus. For many centuries before the American Revolution, this land belonged to the Onondaga Nation, a group of Native American people.
War of 1812 Impact
During the War of 1812, a group of British soldiers attacked the village. They burned almost every building, leaving only one standing. But the people of Sodus Point worked hard to rebuild their village.
Growth and Change
In the 1800s, Sodus Point became an important port on Lake Ontario. Ships would come and go, carrying goods. However, when the Erie Canal was built, it changed how people transported things across New York. This made Sodus Point's role as a port less important.
Later in the 1800s, the village changed again. It became a popular place for vacations, especially for people from cities like Chicago who wanted to enjoy the summers by the lake.
Sodus Point officially became an incorporated village in 1957.
Historic Landmarks
Several important places in Sodus Point are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. These include the schooner Lotus (a type of sailing ship), the Customs House, and the Sodus Point Light (a lighthouse). A famous writer named Elizabeth F. Ellet was also born in this area.
