About South Summit Lake

South Summit Lake is not a huge lake, but it plays an important role in the local water system. It's about 3 kilometers (1.9 miles) long and 0.7 kilometers (0.4 miles) wide. The lake sits at an elevation of 324 meters (1,063 feet) above sea level.

The Journey of Water

The main way water flows into South Summit Lake is from Mojikit Lake. This happens because of something called the Summit Control Dam. Water from the Ogoki River is held back, creating a large area of water known as the Ogoki Reservoir. This water then flows into the north end of South Summit Lake.

The Ogoki River is part of the larger Albany River system. This system eventually drains into James Bay, which is a large body of water connected to the Hudson Bay.

Water Flowing Out

From the south end of South Summit Lake, water flows out over Stork Falls. This water then goes into another lake called Stork Lake. The journey of the water doesn't stop there! It continues to flow south through a series of other lakes.

Finally, the water travels through the Little Jackfish River. This river eventually leads to Lake Nipigon. From Lake Nipigon, the water flows into the Nipigon River, which then empties into Lake Superior. Lake Superior is one of the five Great Lakes of North America. So, water from South Summit Lake makes a long journey all the way to the Great Lakes!
