Spirit Untamed is an animated adventure movie from 2021. It was made by DreamWorks Animation and released by Universal Pictures. Elaine Bogan directed the film. It's part of the Spirit movie world.
This movie is a new story that connects to the 2002 film Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron. It also takes ideas from the Netflix TV show Spirit Riding Free. The film features the voices of Isabela Merced, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Julianne Moore.
The story is about a young girl named Fortuna "Lucky" Prescott. She moves to a small town and meets a wild kiger mustang horse. She names him Spirit, just like his father from the first movie. Lucky and Spirit quickly become very close friends. The movie was made during the COVID-19 pandemic, with people working from home. It was made in memory of Kelly Asbury, who helped direct the first Spirit movie.
Spirit Untamed came out in theaters on June 4, 2021. Critics had mixed feelings about it. Some thought it wasn't as good as the first movie. However, many people liked its animation. The movie cost $30 million to make but only earned $42 million worldwide. This means it didn't make as much money as expected.

The Story of Spirit Untamed
The movie begins in the early 1900s in the Wild West. Lucky's mother, Milagro Navarro-Prescott, was a famous circus rider. Sadly, she fell from a horse during a show and passed away. Years later, her daughter Lucky lives with her aunt Cora and grandfather James in a city.
One day, Lucky causes a bit of trouble at her grandfather's party. Because of this, she and Aunt Cora go to the western town of Miradero. They will stay there for the summer with Lucky's father, Jim. Lucky doesn't know her father very well. On the train ride, Lucky sees a wild kiger mustang horse running with its herd. She feels a special connection to it right away.
When they arrive in Miradero, Lucky meets two local riders: Pru Granger and Abigail Stone. The next day, Lucky sees the same wild horse being treated roughly by a man named Hendricks. Lucky wants to befriend the horse, but her father Jim doesn't want her near horses. He is worried because of what happened to her mother.
Even so, Pru and Abigail help Lucky. They show her how to earn the horse's trust. Lucky names the horse Spirit. After some time, Spirit trusts Lucky enough to eat an apple from her hand. He also lets her pet him, which seals their special friendship.
Lucky tries to ride Spirit, but he runs away from the corral. Lucky almost falls off a cliff, but Pru and Abigail save her. Jim finds Lucky and is upset that she didn't listen to him. They argue, and Lucky thinks her father has given up on her.
That night, Lucky sneaks out. She finds Spirit and his herd in the forest. But Hendricks and his men show up. They capture all the horses except Spirit. They plan to take the horses by train to be sold and forced to work hard. Lucky knows she must help Spirit save his family.
She asks Pru and Abigail to join her. They ride their horses on a long journey. Their plan is to get ahead of the wranglers (horse catchers) and stop them at a water stop. This stop is beyond a big mountain called Heck Mountain. During their trip, Lucky and Spirit grow even closer. Lucky also becomes great friends with Pru and Abigail.
The girls reach the water stop the night before the wranglers. But the next morning, Lucky realizes the wranglers arrived earlier than expected. Spirit tries to save his herd by himself, but he gets captured too. Lucky and her friends are determined to save Spirit. They follow the train to the docks, where the wranglers are putting the horses onto a boat.
The girls arrive too late to stop the boat from leaving. But they manage to save Spirit. Lucky and Spirit jump onto the boat. They free the other horses and stop the wranglers. Spirit even knocks Hendricks off the boat! Soon, Jim, Cora, and Al arrive on a fast train. They arrest Hendricks and his men.
On their way back to Miradero, the girls stop in a beautiful field. Lucky lets Spirit go, knowing he needs to be with his wild herd. When Lucky returns home, she and Cora were going to go back to the city. But after Lucky spends time with Jim at a rodeo, she decides to stay in Miradero. She wants to live with her father and her new friends. Spirit is seen riding freely with his herd in the fields.

How the Movie Was Made
Getting Started
On October 7, 2019, DreamWorks Animation announced they were making a new movie. It would be a spin-off from Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron and also based on the TV show Spirit Riding Free. Elaine Bogan directed the film. Karen Foster produced it.
While the TV show Spirit Riding Free showed the adventures of Lucky and her friends, Spirit Untamed focuses more on Lucky's feelings. It tells a new story that stands on its own.
Animation and Art Style
This movie was made with a smaller budget than some other DreamWorks films. It was animated by a different studio called Jellyfish Pictures. They had over 300 people working on the film.
The movie's style mixes 3D animation with a hand-painted look. This was inspired by the Spirit Riding Free TV show. The team used 2D drawings to create 3D models of the characters. Production started in August 2019. The team then had to work from home because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Music in the Movie
Amie Doherty created the music for Spirit Untamed. She was the first woman to compose music for a DreamWorks film. On May 6, 2021, a song called "Fearless (Valiente Duet)" was released. Isabela Merced and Eiza González sang it.
Another song, "You Belong," sung by Becky G, came out later. The full movie soundtrack was released on May 28, 2021. The theme song from Spirit Riding Free, "Riding Free" by Kari Kimmel, is also in the movie.
