Andre Keith Braugher (born July 1, 1962 – died December 11, 2023) was an American actor. He was well-known for his roles as Detective Frank Pembleton in the police drama series Homicide: Life on the Street (1993–1999) and Captain Raymond Holt in the police comedy series Brooklyn Nine-Nine (2013–2021).
Andre Braugher won two Primetime Emmy Awards for his work on television. He was nominated for these awards eleven times. He also received two Golden Globe Award nominations. He appeared in many movies like Glory (1989), Primal Fear (1996), and Salt (2010). He also acted in TV shows such as Thief, The Good Fight, and New Girl.
Braugher passed away on December 11, 2023, at the age of 61. He had been dealing with a short illness.

Early Life and Education
Andre Braugher was born in Chicago, Illinois, on July 1, 1962. He was the youngest of four children. His mother, Sally, worked for the postal service, and his father, Floyd, operated heavy equipment. He grew up in the Austin neighborhood on Chicago's West Side.
For high school, he attended St. Ignatius College Prep. He then earned a scholarship to Stanford University. In 1984, he graduated from Stanford with a degree in theatre. After that, he studied at the Juilliard School's Drama Division, finishing in 1988.
Acting Career Highlights
Andre Braugher's first movie role was in the 1989 film Glory. He played Thomas Searles, an educated Black man from the North. This character joined the first Black regiment in the Union Army during the American Civil War.
He also played Kojak's assistant in some TV movies in the late 1980s. Later, he became well-known for his role as Detective Frank Pembleton in the TV series Homicide: Life on the Street. His character was a smart and determined police detective. Braugher won awards for his acting in this show in 1997 and 1998. He won a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series in 1998 for Homicide.
In 1997, People magazine named him one of the "50 Most Beautiful People in the World."
Stage and Voice Acting
Andre Braugher also performed in plays. He played the main character in Henry V in 1996 as part of the Shakespeare in the Park series. He won an Obie Award for this role.
He also lent his voice to animated characters. For example, he voiced the villain Darkseid in the animated movie Superman/Batman: Apocalypse. He also narrated several documentaries for PBS, including Muhammad: Legacy of a Prophet and The Murder of Emmett Till.
Later Television Success
In 2006, Braugher starred as Nick Atwater in the mini-series Thief. He won another Emmy Award for this performance. He also appeared in the TV series House, M.D. as Dr. Darryl Nolan, a psychiatrist.
From 2013 to 2021, he starred in the popular comedy series Brooklyn Nine-Nine. He played Captain Raymond Holt, the serious and funny police captain. For this role, he was nominated for four Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series.
Personal Life
In 1991, Andre Braugher married actress Ami Brabson. She also acted with him in Homicide: Life on the Street. They had three sons named Michael, Isaiah, and John Wesley. The family lived in New Jersey.
