Who Was Dominic Savio?
Dominic Savio was born on April 2, 1842, in a small town called Riva di Chier, in Turin, Italy. He was the second of eleven children in his family. His father worked as a blacksmith, and his mother was a seamstress.
Dominic started helping at church as an altar server when he was just five years old. This meant he helped the priest during church services. When he was seven, he received his first Holy Communion. This is a very important event for Catholics.
Dominic's Special Rules
After his First Communion, Dominic wrote down some rules for himself. He promised to always try to follow them. These rules showed how much he loved God and wanted to be a good person:
- I will go to confession and Communion often.
- I will keep holy the feast days.
- Jesus and Mary will be my best friends.
- I will rather die than commit a sin.
From that day on, Dominic lived by his motto: "Death, but not sin!" This meant he would rather die than do something wrong against God.
Dominic's Time with Don Bosco
When Dominic was twelve years old, he met John Bosco, a priest who worked with young boys. Dominic told Don Bosco that he wanted to become a priest too. Don Bosco was very impressed by Dominic's faith and kindness.
Dominic then went to Don Bosco's school. He was always friendly and kind to all the other students. He also had a great love for the Eucharist, which is a central part of Catholic worship.
The Company of the Immaculate Conception
At school, Dominic started a club called the Company of the Immaculate Conception. The boys in this club helped out around the school. They would do jobs like sweeping the floor. They also helped other boys who were having trouble or misbehaving. This club showed Dominic's desire to help others and live a good life.
Dominic's Legacy as a Saint
Sadly, Dominic became ill and died at the young age of 14. He passed away on March 9, 1857.
Many years later, Dominic Savio was recognized as a saint by the Catholic Church. He was canonized on June 12, 1954, by Pope Pius XII.
Patron Saint
Saint Dominic Savio is known as the patron saint for young boys and for people who have been falsely accused of something. His feast day, when he is specially remembered, is March 9, the day he died.
