St. Johnsville is a small village in Montgomery County, New York, United States. In 2020, about 1,643 people lived there. The village's name might come from Alexander St. John, an early surveyor, or from an old name for the area, St. John's Church.
The Village of St. Johnsville is located in the southern part of the Town of St. Johnsville. It lies between the cities of Utica and Amsterdam. In 2019, most of the village was recognized as the St. Johnsville Historic District because of its important history.

Exploring St. Johnsville's Past
Early Settlements and Conflicts
The land where St. Johnsville is now was once home to the Mohawk tribe. European settlers, mainly Palatine Germans, started moving into the Mohawk Valley in the early 1700s. The community of St. Johnsville began around 1775.
A small battle took place in 1780 near Fort Klock during the American Revolution. This fort is just east of St. Johnsville. The village of St. Johnsville officially became a village in 1857.
Famous Visitors and Important Events
On October 12, 1914, former President Theodore Roosevelt visited St. Johnsville. He gave a speech from his car to support a candidate for governor. He talked about avoiding old political parties. The local newspaper noted that he seemed tired.
Later, in 1930, Governor Franklin D. Roosevelt also stopped in St. Johnsville. He spoke about helping farmers. Another future governor, Herbert Lehman, also spoke to the crowd. In 1941, future Governor Thomas Dewey visited a local barber shop.
St. Johnsville experienced a very bad flood on June 28, 2006. It was the worst flood in a hundred years for the village.
Historic Buildings and Local Businesses
Several buildings in St. Johnsville are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. These include the Bates-Englehardt Mansion, the Stone Grist Mill Complex, and the United States Post Office. The Margaret Reaney Memorial Library was added to this list in 2012.
In 2016, Simple Coop Organics, the first organic chicken farm in St. Johnsville, opened. This farm has also invested in the community by offering rental properties.
Geography and Location
St. Johnsville is located at 42°59′58″N 74°40′42″W / 42.99944°N 74.67833°W. The village covers about 0.9 square miles (2.2 square kilometers) of land.
The village sits on the north bank of the Mohawk River and the Erie Canal. Zimmermann Creek, a smaller stream that flows into the Mohawk River, also runs through the village. New York State Route 5 passes through St. Johnsville and is known as Main Street.
